A small, term-time setting for two- to five-year-olds, Octagon Nursery has capacity for 24 children at St. Saviours Church Hall on Eton Road, London NW3 4SU. Its latest Ofsted inspection, on 21 November 2022, judged it Good across education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Safeguarding arrangements were effective.
The strongest thread in that 2022 snapshot was communication. Staff combined sign language, songs, rhymes, stories and specialist language sessions, while children were described as safe, happy and eager to explore.
In November 2022, observed activities supported fine-motor control, early mathematical thinking and emotional literacy across the age range. Children developed these skills through both practical play and adult-guided discussion. Staff held high expectations for what children could achieve, giving those play-based experiences a purposeful direction. These are useful examples of the Early Years Foundation Stage in action: learning is built across communication, physical, personal, social, emotional and early academic development through play and guided activities.
Staff also used sign language outdoors to discuss rainy weather. The inspection nevertheless identified two improvements: group learning sometimes combined too many concepts, and adults did not always seize spontaneous chances for children to practise skills independently.
In November 2022, flexible settling arrangements helped new children feel secure, and key-person relationships gave them a familiar adult. Staff worked closely with parents on self-care. Adults modelled emotions so children could learn to name their feelings.
Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Leaders combined routine risk management with safer recruitment, while training prepared staff to recognise concerns and pass them to the appropriate local service.
