Swiss Cottage Nursery

Stories run through the day. Children chose books independently, joined group stories and learned increasingly complex vocabulary as staff repeated zoo-animal names and connected words to pictures. Play had an investigative edge too: children filled containers with water and bubbles, then fetched pipes to test how sand and water travelled through them. Their choice to fetch extra equipment shows adults allowed an idea to develop rather than closing the activity at its first step. Children concentrated, persevered and explored varied activities, so the setting's strengths extend beyond adult-led story time.

The garden is part of the learning environment as well as the safety checks. Children showed curiosity about plants and growing, although adults did not consistently extend this into deeper knowledge of the natural world. That distinction is useful for parents: interest was present, but planned teaching around it needed more depth.

The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage. In parent terms, this means children learn through play, conversation, relationships and everyday routines across seven connected areas, including communication and language, physical development, personal and social development, literacy and mathematics. It is preparation for the next stage through purposeful experience, not formal classroom lessons. The 2023 development points called for richer outdoor physical opportunities, more planning around the natural world and more chances for children to use expressive language with one another.

Warm relationships and clear routines help children develop confidence and independence. At snack time, children cut fruit and passed it to friends; in the garden, they shared spray bottles and used a timer to take turns fairly. Staff worked with parents to understand prior learning and home languages, while the nursery collaborated with external agencies where extra learning support was needed. This matters because planning starts with what each child can already do rather than a generic age-based activity. Praise and encouragement were used to build self-esteem, and children learned about different families, languages and festivals through visitors, discussion and books in several languages.

Warm adult relationships had a practical result: children felt confident asking adults for help. Staff supported cooperation, turn-taking and fairness rather than managing behaviour only after difficulties arose. Children independently selected books, turned pages beside adults and joined shared stories, combining choice with attentive support. Staff introduced increasingly complex words and clarified meaning with pictures, making careful language teaching clearly visible inside ordinary daily play. The manager also supported professional development and communicated a curriculum vision built around positive relationships.

Safeguarding was found effective in June 2023. Staff understood signs of harm and reporting procedures, with regular risk assessments covering the nursery and garden.

• Outdoor development. The 2023 development point called for stronger opportunities to build physical skills outdoors and deepen children's interest in nature. Families can discuss the subsequent changes during one conversation with the setting.
• Conversation between children. Children gained confidence speaking with staff but were not always encouraged to practise new vocabulary with each other. Families can ask how peer conversation is now planned.
• Practical terms. Settle the weekly pattern and what families must provide before accepting a place.
