UCL Day Nursery

Close relationships and an unusually strong culture of cooperation defined UCL Day Nursery's latest inspection. Ofsted judged the setting Good in March 2022, with children's behaviour and attitudes and their personal development both judged Outstanding. The report found children happy, secure and keen to learn.

The nursery is at 55-59 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0NU. It cares for children from three to 30 months. Its full-day-care model is aimed squarely at families seeking a complete nursery day rather than short wraparound provision.

The March 2022 findings described a broad and enriching curriculum. Children made good progress, including those with special educational needs and disabilities. That combination matters: interesting experiences were not simply keeping children occupied, but were helping them move forward from their individual starting points.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the areas of learning and development that shape nursery education. In practical terms, it means play should build children's communication, physical development, relationships, literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world and expressive skills rather than separating learning into school-style lessons. The 2022 findings describe a curriculum in which children showed excellent attitudes to learning. They persevered and worked cooperatively, which is valuable preparation for later learning as well as for everyday nursery life.

Behaviour was a defining strength. Group expectations were so familiar that older children reminded younger ones how to behave. Children shared toys and resources of their own accord and kept trying when an activity challenged them. For a parent, that points to routines that gave very young children the confidence to participate, wait and learn alongside others.

Settling was personal in March 2022. Staff used children's interests, home routines, likes and dislikes to build close relationships, helping babies and toddlers feel secure. The report's clearest summary was that children were happy and felt safe. For babies and toddlers, who cannot always explain unease in words, that finding carries considerable weight.

Electronic journals, parents' evenings and ideas for learning at home connected nursery experience with family life. This gave parents more than a handover at either end of the day: they could understand what children were working on and reinforce it at home. Staff also promoted healthy eating and oral hygiene, linking daily care with habits that children could carry beyond the setting.

Children with special educational needs and disabilities made good progress at the inspection. Safeguarding arrangements were effective in March 2022. Staff understood signs of abuse and extremism, knew reporting procedures and refreshed their knowledge through training; background checks were also carried out. The date matters because these are findings about the team and practice seen then, not a promise about personnel years later.

The Gordon Square setting serves babies and toddlers rather than preschool-aged children. The provider record classifies it as full-day care. That is the booking model families should use as their starting point, while the precise current attendance agreement belongs in a direct conversation before applying.

In March 2022, mealtimes were relaxed, with staff sitting and eating alongside children as role models. This made eating part of social learning rather than a pause in it. Families should request a current written quotation directly from the nursery.

• Thinking time. Ofsted's March 2022 improvement point was to give children longer to think and answer questions. Families may want to ask how practitioners now build pause and response time into conversations.

• Young age range. Care runs only to 30 months in the provider record. Families needing continuity beyond toddlerhood should ask about the transition timetable and plan their next setting early.

UCL Day Nursery's clearest strengths in March 2022 were warm relationships, exceptionally positive behaviour and purposeful learning for very young children. The cooperation between children and the progress made by children with SEND add substance to the Good overall judgement. It suits families seeking full-day care for a baby or toddler, especially those who value strong settling relationships and close parent communication. Parents should nevertheless establish the current operating detail because the inspection is a dated snapshot.
