Barbican Playgroup

A small, sessional playgroup for children aged two to five, Barbican Playgroup combines a 20-place setting with an inclusive approach that was recognised in its December 2025 Ofsted report card. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes learning across seven areas, so communication, physical development and relationships sit alongside literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts. Progress against the EYFS Learning Outcomes is tracked termly, helping staff identify a child’s next steps and adapt their approach where progress needs support.

December 2025 observations show what that meant in practice. Staff developed children’s communication, cutting and mark-making in small, purposeful steps. An interest in sea creatures became an ocean sensory activity; colour mixing and floating-and-sinking investigations took place at the water tray. Children also designed a Christmas display and recreated a bakery visit with play dough.

Physical development has a clear place. The dedicated gross-motor space supports energetic indoor play, while a park journey was used for imaginative storytelling and for children to identify a slippery bridge footpath over a pond and explain how to cross safely.

Relationships were a major strength in December 2025. Children formed secure attachments to staff and peers, confidently drew adults into their play and talked about personal experiences. Staff balanced active play with rest on cushions or stories in a designated area, giving children a clear way to slow down within the session.

Inclusion was judged at the strong standard. The small team worked with local-authority professionals, adjusted experiences for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and supported children learning English as an additional language. Home visits before joining, key-person observations and continuing parental involvement helped connect starting points, next steps and home life. Parents also have daily conversations, meetings twice a year and termly reviews.

Safeguarding standards were met in December 2025. Ofsted also set two useful priorities: leaders should give children more consistent opportunities to develop independence and establish a clearer, more consistent approach to behavioural expectations.

Barbican Playgroup is at Levels 01 and 02, Andrewes House, Barbican, London EC2Y 8AX. It has capacity for 20 children and takes children aged two to five.

The core pattern is Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 1pm. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, families can add an extra session from 1pm to 2.45pm. This is sessional provision, not a long-day nursery offer.

Access deserves advance planning: the playrooms are reached only by stairs from the Barbican walkway (Podium) or through the car park below. Current nursery-specific prices are supplied in the provider’s written quotation.

• Session length. The standard day ends at 1pm, and the later 2.45pm finish operates only from Tuesday to Thursday. Families needing full working-day coverage will require another arrangement.
• Step-only access. The playrooms are reached by stairs from the Barbican walkway (Podium) or through the car park below. Test the route with any buggy or mobility equipment your family uses.
• Independence and behaviour. Ofsted asked leaders to strengthen opportunities for independence and make behavioural expectations more consistent. Ask what has changed since the December 2025 inspection.

Barbican Playgroup suits families seeking a compact, social morning setting for a two- to five-year-old, especially those who value individual next-step planning and strong inclusion. It can also work for families wanting an extended early-afternoon pattern on Tuesday to Thursday.
