Canterbury Tender Care Nursery

Three clearly defined age groups, a sensory room and a dedicated ICT room give Canterbury Tender Care Nursery a practical identity beyond a standard day-nursery layout. It has capacity for 74 children from three months to five years, at 91-93 Canterbury Road in Croydon. Baby Dolphin’s Room is for the youngest children, Little Lamb’s covers the middle stage and Big Panda’s Room is for preschool children.

In June 2022, the nursery was Good overall, with Good judgements for education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Children formed positive relationships with staff, became absorbed in play and spent substantial time outdoors exploring and investigating. Those findings date from 2022, so they sit alongside, rather than replace, the later regulatory history.

The current Canterbury fee document sets out all-year, term-time and session-only attendance packages. The practical choice is broader than full-day care alone.

Rooms and Ages

The room structure is explicit. Baby Dolphin’s Room covers the nought-to-two stage, Little Lamb’s serves two to three year olds, and Big Panda’s Room is for three to five year olds. Each has a themed design and resources for children in that group. Families joining with a very young baby should note that the nursery’s overall starting age is three months.

Tender Care’s group-wide approach uses the Early Years Foundation Stage. That is the national framework for learning, development and care from birth to five, so the day should combine play, adult-led experiences and child-led exploration rather than formal lessons. Its routine includes adult-initiated, child-initiated, small-group and large-group activities; at Canterbury, the age-group rooms and specialist spaces give that approach a physical form.

In June 2022, babies explored toys and real foods, toddlers balanced scale buckets, and preschool children experimented with melting ice. Older children used a mud kitchen to make recipes, while younger children caught sea creatures with nets. Those dated observations point to a play-led curriculum with language, early mathematics and outdoor investigation running through it.

Learning and Named Experiences

The ICT Room has laptops, computers and an interactive audio touch table for multiplayer games, storytelling and rhyme sing-alongs. It gives staff a purpose-built place for technology-based activity rather than treating a screen as the day’s main event.

The Sensory Room includes a light-up ball pit, microphone, sensory cave, bubble panel and relaxation area. Two outdoor spaces, two indoor physical jungle-gym structures and the Outdoor Water Feature add movement and tactile play to the branch’s published offer. At the water feature, pouring, squirting, scrubbing, stirring and squeezing are linked with fine-motor and hand-eye development.

In June 2022, children formed strong attachments to their key person and staff responded warmly when younger children were unsettled. Staff also used meaningful questions, time to respond and new vocabulary to support communication, including for children with SEND and those learning English as an additional language.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective in June 2022. There is, however, later regulatory context that families should weigh alongside the Good judgement. Following concerns received in July 2024, a regulatory telephone call found unmet requirements around staff suitability, supervision, behaviour management, staff deployment and risk assessments for outings. By August 2024, the provider had reviewed these areas and taken action to put matters right.

That later action does not erase the importance of the 2022 result, nor does the 2022 result explain the later concerns. It makes a focused conversation about today’s supervision, deployment and outing procedures a sensible part of choosing the nursery.

Canterbury Tender Care Nursery is at 91-93 Canterbury Road, Croydon, CR0 3HH. It opens Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00. The branch document gives a full day as 08:00 to 18:00, a morning session as 08:00 to 13:00 and an afternoon session as 13:00 to 18:00.

Sessions and Attendance

Families can choose all-year, term-time or session-only packages. The branch document also describes funded-entitlement-only patterns of three morning sessions, three afternoon sessions, mixed morning and afternoon sessions, three full days or five sessions. This makes the nursery practical for a family assembling a week around work days as well as for one needing a repeated part-day pattern.

The document lists 15-hour funded entitlement for children aged two, three and four, and 30-hour working-parent entitlement for children from nine months to four years. Eligibility depends on the family’s circumstances. Current nursery-specific prices are supplied in the provider’s written quotation; for funded-entitlement-only packages, the Canterbury document treats meals as a separate charge.

The branch page places the nursery near Thornton Heath, Norbury and Purley Way, with access via bus routes. No journey time is claimed here, so a trial journey at the family’s usual travel time remains worthwhile.

• The 2024 regulatory action. The later outcome concerns staff suitability, supervision, behaviour management, deployment and outing risk assessments, even though it records corrective action. Ask how those procedures now work day to day, including how children are supervised on outings.

Canterbury Tender Care Nursery has a clearly published three-room structure and more specialist physical spaces than many small settings, especially the ICT Room, Sensory Room and Outdoor Water Feature. The June 2022 Good result gives useful evidence of relationships, outdoor learning and a well-sequenced curriculum, but the August 2024 regulatory action is essential context and deserves a direct conversation before enrolment.

It is best suited to families who want a choice between full-day attendance and repeated morning or afternoon sessions, with all-year and term-time package options. The right fit will depend on confidence in the current safeguarding and supervision arrangements, as well as whether the age-based room progression works for the child.
