A separate building behind Beulah Family Church, a large outdoor area of its own and outings that connect stories with real places give Chosen Treasures Early Years its character. This Thornton Heath nursery combines play indoors with daily outdoor exploration, giving children opportunities to follow an interest beyond the activity table. In October 2025, that meant a woodland search for the Gruffalo at Spa Hill Woods and a pet-themed visit to Pets at Home.
Children aged two to five are accepted, with 24 places in total. At its June 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective, alongside positive findings about individual learning, communication and support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. That judgement belongs to the inspection date.
Term-time attendance offers a choice of full days, mornings or afternoons.
Butterfly room and Caterpillar room feature in the nursery's October 2025 activities. Butterfly room explored woodland animals before visiting Spa Hill Woods in search of the Gruffalo; Caterpillar room's learning about pets led to a visit to Pets at Home. These examples show how an interest can become an experience outside the nursery, with something concrete for children to talk about afterwards.
The premises include spacious areas inside and outside. Supervised free-flow access gives children opportunities to move outdoors, where nature activities and messy play extend their exploration. This makes outdoor experience part of the nursery day rather than something confined to an occasional outing.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for learning through play across seven areas of learning. Here, activities draw on children's interests, with staff using questions, conversation and practical experiences to extend what children already know. Daily outdoor exploration and regular outings add different settings in which to explore those interests.
In June 2022, learning often grew out of familiar experiences. A pretend dentist's surgery gave older children opportunities to take different roles, wait their turn and use language connected with dental care. Discussions about teeth linked with food choices, while an outdoor toothbrushing station brought shape and movement into the conversation. The useful connection was between something children recognised and new words or ideas they could try in play.
In June 2022, toddlers poured their own drinks and children dressed themselves for the garden. Preparing vegetables outdoors also brought mathematical language into practical tasks.
In June 2022, children explored filling and emptying containers with water tubes in the garden. Tricycles and kicking balls towards a net gave them opportunities to practise coordination.
Sports Day in June 2025 recognised children's efforts with medals and certificates. For World Book Day in March 2025, children dressed as favourite book characters and read traditional stories. Curriculum Day in October 2024 gave parents ideas for learning with their children at home.
Settling begins with two free sessions, each lasting two hours. Parents stay for the first visit, using that time to share their child's routines, preferences and needs with the key person; they may also stay during the second session. This gives the relationship a practical starting point: staff can learn about the child from the people who know them best.
Daily feedback keeps parents involved after settling. Families also receive pages from the monthly key book to revisit learning at home. The book itself is not sold.
In June 2022, communication also included newsletters, a parent communication group and a parent forum through which families could contribute ideas. Home activities extended nursery learning beyond the session. These are inspection-era examples of parent involvement; daily feedback and the monthly book are part of the current arrangements.
A SENCO works with the key person to put support targets and strategies into practice. With parental consent, the SENCO can involve Health Visitors, Speech and Language Therapists and Early Years Inclusion Officers. That gives families a defined route for coordinating advice, rather than leaving nursery support separate from the professionals already involved with their child.
At the June 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that staff identified additional needs early, worked with families and professionals on shared targets and supported children's progress; it also required a more consistent staff response to behaviour because some children were missing opportunities to participate fully in learning. Both sides matter. Individual support was a strength at that point, but consistent responses across adults needed attention.
In June 2022, staff used signing alongside spoken language, including with children learning English as an additional language. They also encouraged children to express feelings and used an emotions display. These practical methods offered different ways to communicate, rather than relying entirely on a child finding the right spoken words.
The address is Beulah Family Church, Beulah Crescent, Thornton Heath, CR7 8JL, with access from Osbourne Road. Chosen Treasures operates during term time for 38 weeks of the year and closes for bank holidays. Families therefore need an attendance plan that fits the school-holiday breaks.
Full-time sessions run from 8am to 6pm. Morning sessions run from 8am to 1pm, and afternoon sessions from 1pm to 6pm. Flexible childcare is also offered, alongside breakfast and after-school club arrangements on request. The nursery's Friday arrangements need particular attention before a weekly pattern is agreed.
Applications must be completed and returned before a child joins. The waiting-list order begins when the nursery receives the application and non-refundable registration fee, with priority for siblings already attending and consideration of circumstances affecting a child's or family's welfare. This is a booking rule, rather than an indication of how many places are free.
Parking is free and on-street, and the 450 bus stop is close to the nursery. The 250 route is another nearby public-transport option, so families can consider bus access alongside parking when planning their routine.
Funded childcare is offered for eligible two-year-olds and for three- and four-year-olds, covering 15 hours a week over 38 weeks. Universal funding starts the term after a child's third birthday. Two-year-old funding requires an eligibility code to be checked before a funded place can be offered. Private childcare is also offered; current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Parents supply packed lunches; private fees include snacks and drinks, while funded attendance requires a snack from home and offers optional, separately charged light tea for afternoon sessions. The nursery has a nut-free policy, and water and milk are offered during the day.
For both funded and private attendance, parents provide nappies, wipes and creams where needed, as well as spare clothing. These are separate from food arrangements and belong in the family's everyday preparation for nursery.
Chosen Treasures suits families seeking term-time care with a choice between full-day attendance and morning or afternoon sessions. Its separate building, outdoor space and interest-led outings give the offer a recognisable shape, while daily feedback and shared book pages connect nursery experiences with home.
The June 2022 Good judgement provides a positive dated assessment, balanced by the requirement for more consistent behaviour support. For a family choosing now, the strongest decision points are the outdoor emphasis, the settling arrangements and the practical fit of the weekly pattern, especially Fridays.
Ofsted rated it Good in June 2022 and found safeguarding effective. It required staff to respond more consistently to children's behaviour so that children could participate fully in play and learning.
