Happy Little Angels Day Nursery cares for children from six months to five years at Croydon Unitarian Free Christian Church, beneath the Croydon Flyover. It has capacity for 39 children. The latest inspection, on 11 September 2025, judged the nursery Requires Improvement, while finding safeguarding effective.

This is a setting in active repair rather than one whose weaknesses can be treated as historical. Ofsted required better staff coaching and training, stronger observation and assessment, and a more challenging curriculum by 31 October 2025.

In September 2025, planned learning did not stretch children sufficiently across the indoor and outdoor provision. Teaching was often overly directed, while some staff supervised rather than joining children's play. Indoors, toy-animal play was not extended through meaningful discussion; outdoors, climbing and running were not developed into richer physical challenges. The consequence matters: Ofsted concluded that children, including vulnerable and disadvantaged children, were not making enough progress. Language development was specifically limited when staff supervised rather than interacting. For parents, the test of improvement is whether practitioners now build sustained conversation around a child’s chosen play and add resources that deepen it, rather than simply overseeing an activity.

The nursery operates within the Early Years Foundation Stage. In everyday terms, that framework should connect play, communication, physical development and assessment so practitioners know what each child needs next. The inspection found that observations and assessments were not yet shaping a sufficiently ambitious sequence of learning.

Relationships provide a firmer base. In September 2025, recently arrived children received comfort and praise, children played with peers, and staff encouraged polite manners. Children were also taught to serve themselves at mealtimes and tuck in chairs, building manageable steps towards independence.

Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Leaders had improved staff knowledge of safeguarding and reporting procedures and worked with other professionals to review practice, including risk assessment. Staff and parents also worked together over learning and care, including for children with possible special educational needs and disabilities. This partnership gives families a route to align care at home with nursery practice. Bilingual staff encouraged home languages and helped children understand similarities and differences, so cultural inclusion had a concrete place in daily communication.

Hygiene remained a concern. Staff did not consistently wash their hands after cleaning children's noses, increasing the risk of infection spreading. Families should weigh that specific weakness alongside the positive safeguarding judgement. Self-evaluation also needed improvement so leaders could identify weaknesses and address them quickly. Together, these findings make management follow-through central to any decision: day-to-day warmth mattered, but it did not compensate for weaknesses in teaching, hygiene and oversight.

The nursery is at Croydon Unitarian Free Christian Church, The Croydon Flyover, Croydon CR0 1ER. It is recorded as open all year, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6.30pm, closing on bank holidays and for one week at Christmas. These hours describe the operating window. • Curriculum improvement. Ofsted required stronger observation, assessment, coaching and training by 31 October 2025. Concrete examples of what changed after that deadline should show how leaders now check teaching quality.
• Hygiene practice. The September 2025 report identified inconsistent handwashing after staff cleaned children's noses. Current supervision and auditing of this routine is a key question for a visit.

Happy Little Angels Day Nursery has warm relationships, effective safeguarding at its latest inspection and credible strengths in independence, cultural inclusion and parent partnership. Yet the 2025 judgement cannot be softened: teaching, assessment and curriculum ambition all required improvement, and hygiene practice also needed attention. This setting best suits families considering either full-day or half-day care who are prepared to examine the post-inspection changes closely and test whether coaching and curriculum work is visible in children's daily experiences. Improvement needs to be demonstrated in practice, not assumed from the passage of time.
