A large garden gives Little Raccoons Day Nursery Coulsdon a clear physical asset, while its June 2022 assessment gives parents a more qualified picture of the care inside. Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 13 June 2022, with the youngest children’s learning spaces and early language teaching identified as areas needing further attention. Those baby-room questions deserve as much weight as the overall grade.
The nursery is on Linden Avenue in Coulsdon, CR5 3BT, and has 62 places in total. It accepts children aged 3 to 59 months. Babies and preschool children therefore fall within its age range, but the whole-setting capacity should not be read as the number sharing an individual room. Opening hours run from 7.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the educational framework: children learn through play, conversations, physical activity and adult guidance. It is the shared foundation for early-years provision, so the useful question is how practitioners translate it into everyday experiences.
In June 2022, activities drew on children’s interests and existing understanding. Farm animals and sea creatures supplied subjects to explore, while counting, sorting and solving problems brought mathematical language into play. This connected early learning with things children already wanted to investigate, rather than treating number work as an isolated exercise.
Practical tasks also gave children something concrete to master. In June 2022, staff encouraged persistence as children learnt to handle scissors, and recognised their successes. The emphasis was on trying again and completing a task. These practical tasks gave children opportunities to persevere and develop control when using tools.
The large outdoor garden is a current feature of the Coulsdon setting. It gives outdoor space a substantial place in the nursery’s physical offer, although the activities described below belong to June 2022.
At that time, older children used scooters and trikes outside, while younger children transferred sand between containers. These were different forms of physical practice: movement and balance for the older children, and controlled hand movements for the younger ones. Chalkboard marks gave very young children another way to experiment with using their hands.
Watering cans, mud and wooden spoons also featured in June 2022 outdoor play. Children moved water and mixed materials, combining exploration with imaginative activity. The appeal here is the practical nature of the experiences: children had materials to manipulate and actions to repeat.
The baby room and big baby room were the important qualifications to the June 2022 picture. Their environments did not consistently draw the youngest children into exploration and learning. Language interactions were also uneven, especially in the baby room. For a family choosing care for a baby, the organisation of the room and the quality of everyday conversation are therefore central decision points.
Relationships supplied much of the June 2022 care detail. A key person collected information from families when children started, including words used in their home language. Some practitioners could converse with children in that language, creating a practical link between home and nursery. For a child beginning care in a different language environment, familiar words can make communication less unfamiliar.
Daily exchanges with a key person were part of parent communication in June 2022. Information about children’s backgrounds and development also accompanied moves between rooms and the eventual move to school. This was transition work centred on the child’s experience and learning, rather than an admissions relationship with a named school.
At the June 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective, with staff recognising welfare concerns, understanding how to raise them and carrying out daily premises checks. That is a dated judgement, not a substitute for understanding how a child’s care works now.
Everyday independence was visible in June 2022 too. Children helped prepare tables for meals, and practitioners modelled polite language and reminded them how to handle scissors and cutlery safely. Small responsibilities gave children opportunities to take part in routines, alongside their play.

The June 2022 account contains useful examples of practical play, independence and links with home languages.
