Little Whits Nursery

Little Whits Nursery is a 42-place day nursery for children from six months to five years, based at Whitgift Sports Club, The Clubhouse, Croham Manor Road, South Croydon, CR2 7BG. Ofsted rated it Good in May 2024, with Good judgements across education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Safeguarding arrangements were effective.

This is a setting whose strongest evidence lies in purposeful, hands-on play. During the inspection, children made aliens from dough, recreated a baby bear's trip to the moon using story trays, and crossed stepping buckets outdoors. Those are playful activities with clear developmental work behind them: vocabulary, counting, mark making, balance and spatial awareness.

The curriculum sits within the Early Years Foundation Stage. In everyday terms, this framework means play and routines should build communication, physical and social development alongside early literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding of the world, rather than reproducing a classroom timetable.

In May 2024, inspectors saw children absorbed in varied learning experiences. A space theme linked dough modelling with rolling, pressing, counting googly eyes and new vocabulary. Story trays encouraged children to retell a moon journey, while pencils and rulers supported confident mark making. In the home corner, pretend ironing, meal preparation and doll walks developed imagination; magnetic shapes prompted talk about shape, size and colour.

Outdoor provision was active and daily at the time of inspection. Wheeled toys, balls, hoops and stepping buckets gave children repeated practice in coordination, balance and judging space. The curriculum also introduced countries, traditions and events beyond children's own experience through stories, resources and creative work.

Relationships are a clear strength. Inspectors found that staff formed meaningful bonds with children and families, with settling arrangements tailored to individual needs. Calm, consistent behaviour support and praise helped children develop confidence and self-esteem. Parents reported regular information sharing and gains in language, social skills and confidence.

Communication and literacy were woven through play. Staff used songs, questions, stories and fresh vocabulary; younger children sang with instruments, while dough play introduced words such as flatten, press and roll. Support for children with special educational needs or developmental gaps was planned with parents and other professionals.

Healthy snacks and balanced hot meals were served communally in small groups at the inspection. Ofsted's improvement point was precise: younger children needed more opportunity to develop independence and social skills during mealtime routines. Leaders were also asked to target professional development more sharply towards teaching skills and children's outcomes.

The registered age range is six months to five years. A full-day or half-day booking cannot be assumed from an operating window; the nursery's written terms should define the sessions it actually sells. The nursery is recorded as open all year, closing for bank holidays, one week in August and one week at Christmas. Current written terms are essential because the provider's booking model, funded-entitlement treatment and division of charges are not established here.

A quotation should separate any funded entitlement, additional paid hours, meals, non-food consumables and other charge categories. That makes like-for-like comparison possible without relying on a headline figure.

• Mealtime independence. Ofsted asked the nursery to give younger children more opportunity to develop social skills and independence during meals. Families of babies and toddlers should look at how seating, serving and conversation now support participation.
• Teaching development. Leaders were asked to sharpen professional development so that staff teaching improves children's outcomes. Look for adults adapting vocabulary and challenge for different ages.
• Attendance terms. The precise booking patterns remain the key practical question. Secure the required days, times, closures and notice terms in writing.
• Everyday costs. A breakdown of funded hours, meals and non-food consumables will show the practical cost of the intended pattern.

Little Whits makes its case through warm relationships and concrete learning rather than glossy programme names. The strongest inspection examples are well chosen: dough becomes language and counting, story trays become literacy, and stepping buckets turn outdoor play into coordination and spatial judgement. Its Good 2024 rating and effective safeguarding provide a reassuring regulatory anchor.

The two improvement points matter, especially for younger children: mealtimes should build independence, and professional development should strengthen teaching. This setting is likely to suit families prioritising warm relationships, active learning and a broad baby-to-preschool age range. The practical fit depends on its current written attendance terms.
