Babies explored paint, made marks with pens and learned to climb stairs before manoeuvring themselves onto a slide. Toddlers hunted for Easter eggs in shredded paper and filled buckets with sand to make birthday cakes. Older children made dough, then worked out how to correct it when it became too sticky. These are purposeful examples of learning through play rather than activities chosen only to occupy time.

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the areas of learning that shape children's days, including communication, physical development and early mathematics. Here, inspectors found communication and language given high priority through songs, stories, new vocabulary and questions that allowed children time to answer. Yoga, scooters and bucket stilts extended physical development into the garden.

Conversation did more than accompany play. Practitioners introduced vocabulary, posed meaningful questions and allowed children time to formulate an answer. Observations and assessments helped them spot gaps, while extra help could then be directed where a child needed it. Good manners, sharing and kindness were taught alongside independence. Older children also discussed the difference between good and sad choices, making behaviour part of the learning rather than a separate set of rules.

Relationships were a clear strength. Children received warm greetings, babies benefited from attentive interaction, and the key-person system supported continuity between home and nursery. Parents received daily updates about routines, interests and activities, although leaders needed to share children's next learning steps and ideas for learning at home more consistently.

Children with SEND received tailored support. Leaders worked with parents and other professionals, used additional funding for equipment and monitored children's progress. Healthy snacks and meals formed part of the inspected day.

Care also supported everyday capability. Practitioners encouraged children to manage tasks for themselves, behave kindly and share with others. That combination connects personal development to ordinary routines rather than reserving it for planned activities.

Leadership practice added another layer of oversight. Recruitment checks, frequent supervision and staff training were in place, while managers observed teaching and tracked progress. Liaison with local schools supported transitions, but this describes preparation for a child's next stage, not an admissions advantage.
