The early years foundation stage sets requirements for children's learning, development and care. Here, the April 2022 examples included songs for babies, vocabulary introduced through role play and adults connecting words with children's actions. A stethoscope became a chance to explain what listening to a heartbeat means. Learning grew from ordinary play.

These gave children different ways to practise movement and explore materials. Access needed attention, however: some children interested in outdoor play waited too long to use the garden.
Home languages were another improvement priority that April. Staff did not bring them into play sufficiently, limiting opportunities to connect English learning with children's other languages and sense of identity.
