Bal Krishna Nursery

At a Glance

Hindu values, shared painting and imaginative play gave Bal Krishna Nursery a recognisable character in June 2022. In June 2022, its curriculum combined Hindu values with practical, creative activities. At its 28 June 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall.

The nursery has capacity for 36 children and accepts ages from 3 to 60 months. It is based at Skss Temple South East London in Greenwich.

The Nursery Experience

In June 2022, the curriculum drew on Hindu values, combining collaboration and respect with learning about culture and encouraging children to try things. Stories and celebrations introduced other religions and cultures, extending children's understanding beyond their own experiences.

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: activities support learning alongside everyday wellbeing. In June 2022, children turned cardboard boxes into a pretend train and explored mixing materials in the mud kitchen. These gave them practical opportunities to imagine, talk and experiment.

During that same month, a collaborative painting involved fingers, rollers and brushes of different sizes. Bikes and scooters also became opportunities to practise shared rules, with children using traffic lights to organise their play. Guru Purnima celebrations brought parents, children and leaders together to express appreciation for staff.

Care and Support

At the June 2022 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding and good support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, but identified inconsistent help with communication and language, including insufficient time for some children to answer questions.

In June 2022, staff assessed children's next learning steps and identified additional support needs. Conversations with parents covered both children's achievements and their next steps, while parents contributed skills such as helping children grow vegetables. This linked home experience with nursery activities.

Regular yoga formed part of the June 2022 provision, giving children another way to be physically active. A nursery chef prepared food following the Sattvic vegetarian diet, and children were encouraged to explore unfamiliar flavours.

Practical Information

The address is Skss Temple South East London, St Margaret's Grove, Greenwich, SE18 7RL. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, with year-round opening.

In June 2022, the nursery received funding for free early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. This describes its funding participation at that time rather than an entitlement for an individual family today.

Things to Consider

  • Language development. The June 2022 improvement priority concerned consistent support for communication. Ask how staff now extend conversations and give children time to respond.
  • Values in daily life. Hindu values shaped the June 2022 curriculum, alongside stories and celebrations about other cultures. Consider how that balance fits your family's preferences.
  • Planning a place. The accepted age range extends from 3 to 60 months. At a visit, ask how settling and care are organised for your child's age.

The Verdict

For families interested in values-led learning, creative play and contributing to nursery activities, the June 2022 inspection describes an appealing approach. Its June 2022 provision combined imaginative activities, cultural learning and physical movement. The communication improvement priority deserves attention alongside those strengths; the weekday opening window also matters for families arranging care around work.
