Beavers Playgroup

Beavers Playgroup is a small, sessional setting at Rose Lipman Community Centre in Hackney, with capacity for 20 children. The Early Years Foundation Stage is the statutory framework. For children, this means learning through play and responsive adult interaction. The curriculum observed in June 2025 used play and adult interaction to develop communication, physical skills and personal development. Its ambition was visible in unusually concrete ways. Initially reluctant children became absorbed in a sensory tray, making shapes and letters from their names and taking pride in the result.

Outdoor learning had similar breadth. Children drove cars around a circuit, negotiated climbing equipment, danced and sang, then moved between counting, pouring, mark-making and cutting. Staff planned for hand-eye coordination, core strength and gross-motor development while preserving time for uninterrupted exploration.

Relationships were a clear strength at the 2025 inspection. Children were happy and secure, staff formed close attachments, and routines prepared them calmly for snack, lunch and outdoor time. Home-language greetings helped children participate, while favourite books, open questions and careful listening developed confident communication.

Individual plans, assessment and work with parents and other professionals supported children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Ofsted found safeguarding effective in June 2025; staff understood risk assessment, child-protection procedures and what to do when the manager was absent.
