Independent Place Nursery

At a Glance

Cooking, conversation and gardens gave Independent Place Nursery its strongest character in November 2021: children worked through recipes, explored their own ideas and chose outdoor resources independently. At its 19 November 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding, finding that children progressed rapidly through teaching shaped around their individual needs. The practical learning mattered as much as the activities themselves.

This Hackney nursery has capacity for 49 children, with an accepted age range of 3 to 60 months. Its address is 26–27 Independent Place, Shacklewell Place, London E8 2HD. For parents comparing care from infancy onwards, the useful distinction is between that whole-nursery capacity and the number of children sharing a particular room.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. In everyday language, that means play and relationships serve an educational purpose alongside children's physical care; activities help children practise communication, movement and early learning.

In November 2021, planning in each room identified what children were intended to learn. Activities were tailored to individual needs, rather than simply organised around keeping everyone occupied. Staff used questions to help children develop their ideas and connect one experience with another. That gives a parent a more useful picture of teaching than a list of toys.

Language ran through the day in November 2021. Adults talked alongside children's play, returned to useful vocabulary and helped children build longer sentences. Conversation was part of ordinary activity, rather than confined to a separate language exercise. Children had opportunities to hear words used in context and then extend their own speech.

Cooking brought several kinds of learning together. In November 2021, children followed a recipe while practising mathematical ideas, and preschool children helped decide the rules before baking. Following instructions and discussing how to behave gave the activity a purpose beyond producing food. Computers and videos also supported investigations into the surrounding world.

Outdoor and Community Life

In November 2021, the gardens offered resources that children could select for themselves, with challenge built into outdoor play. Indoors, the organisation of equipment supported play with more than one possible outcome. Children could explore an idea rather than work towards a single prescribed result.

Learning about the local community and the wider world also featured in November 2021. Experiences helped children consider differences between people, including age and ageing. The emphasis was on understanding other lives, alongside developing independence in their own.

Care and Support

Babies received attentive, responsive care in a calm setting in November 2021. Adults responded to their needs while allowing them to explore. For families choosing infant care, that combination is the important point: comfort and opportunities to investigate were treated as connected parts of the day.

Relationships with parents supported consistency between home and nursery in November 2021. Following pandemic-related time away, staff helped families settle children back into familiar routines. The example illustrates the role of parent communication during a difficult transition, rather than treating settling as only a child's responsibility.

At the November 2021 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective, with staff able to recognise possible abuse, explain how to act on concerns and identify where to obtain advice. Procedures addressed mobile-phone use, while training supported staff knowledge. This is a dated safeguarding judgement.

In November 2021, meals were cooked on site, recipes were shared with families, and children's and parents' favourites influenced menus. Food therefore created a connection between nursery and home; at Independent Place, organic ingredients are used whenever possible.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Independent Place opens from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. It operates across the year, with bank-holiday closures and a Christmas and New Year break whose dates vary annually. Families building a working-week routine need to allow for those closures as well as the daily opening window.

Funding and Paid Extras

In November 2021, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged three and four. That is the funding position at that date. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Baby-room arrangements. The nursery's 49 places cover the whole setting. On a visit, ask how the youngest children are grouped and how their sleep and exploration fit together.
  • Funding and the total bill. In November 2021, children aged three and four could receive funded early education here. Ask which entitlements apply to your proposed attendance and how funding affects your written quotation.
  • Holiday cover. Bank holidays and the annual Christmas and New Year closure interrupt an otherwise year-round routine. Match the nursery's closure dates to your family's care needs before choosing an attendance plan.

The Verdict

Independent Place suits families seeking care from infancy onwards who value learning through practical experiences and conversation. Its November 2021 assessment gives a strong account of individual teaching, responsive baby care and independent exploration in the gardens. The 8am–6pm weekday opening window is useful for assessing the fit with work; the baby-room arrangements and the proposed funding package deserve close attention when choosing a place.
