Bright Horizons Fulham Wharf Day Nursery and Preschool

At a Glance

A science lab, an art studio and a garden divided by age give Fulham Wharf a clear physical identity. Inside a Victorian Grade II listed building, children have spaces for creative work, exploration and rest, rather than a day spent entirely in their age-group room. The breadth of spaces is the practical attraction here.

Bright Horizons Fulham Wharf Day Nursery and Preschool accepts children from 3 months to 5 years at Grove House, Bagleys Lane, Fulham. At its 26 October 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, finding effective safeguarding, positive language development and good support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). A later organisational safeguarding notice is material to a parent's decision and is addressed below.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The baby sensory room uses toys to encourage exploration, while the preschool room emphasises preparation for school. These are dedicated spaces for different stages of development. For a family with siblings, the overall age range allows both younger and older children to attend the same setting while having different room environments.

Beyond those rooms, the soft play area provides space for active play, and the cot room gives sleep a separate setting. The music room and IT studio add further environments to the day. These facilities make the building's organisation worth considering alongside the individual room: learning, movement and rest each have a physical place.

Learning and Activities

EYFS is the framework for children's learning, development and care, connecting play and everyday experiences with learning. Alongside it sits the group-wide Nurture Approach, which combines attention to wellbeing with creative activities and the development of practical skills. This group approach builds on EYFS through creative activities that develop skills and confidence.

For older children, Ready for School develops early literacy, maths and other skills before the move to school. Its value is the specific preparation it adds to preschool life. The science lab and art studio also give exploration and making their own spaces, adding variety to the environments children can use.

In October 2023, practitioners used observations of children's interests and existing knowledge to plan subsequent activities. Stories and songs featured in language learning. Children also practised choosing resources, tidying away and managing clothes, so everyday tasks formed part of learning alongside planned activities.

Outdoor and Community Life

The garden has separate areas for different ages, with trikes, slides and a mud kitchen providing different ways to move and play. A covered all-weather area adds another outdoor space. For babies and older children, the age divisions matter as much as the equipment: outdoor provision is organised around their different stages.

Older children take weekly outings to local parks and the library. This adds experiences beyond the building and garden to their week, including time in community spaces. The frequency is a useful distinction for parents who want outings to be a recurring part of nursery life.

Care and Support

Communication includes the Bright Horizons Family app, through which parents can follow daily experiences and developmental milestones. In October 2023, staff also talked with parents each day and shared children's next learning steps. That combination connects what happens during nursery hours with what families can continue at home.

Home routines informed settling in October 2023. Practitioners learned about children's care at home and used that information as children became accustomed to nursery. During personal care, adults talked and sang with children, making these moments opportunities for interaction as well as meeting practical needs.

In October 2023, the organisation of routines needed improvement. In October 2023, lunchtime did not consistently give children enough opportunities to practise independence, and lengthy waits between activities sometimes unsettled children and affected behaviour. These are specific questions about how the day works, rather than criticisms of the facilities.

In a notice dated 22 June 2026, Ofsted recorded that it had served a legal Welfare Requirements Notice following organisational safeguarding weaknesses across some Bright Horizons settings, and that the provider had not demonstrated it could ensure consistently effective safeguarding across its provision. The actions concerned organisational arrangements, with concerns not identified at every individual setting and the majority continuing to meet requirements. The notice required improvements to leadership oversight, implementation of safeguarding procedures, handling of concerns and allegations, and staff training and supervision, with actions due by 1 August 2026. The latest published position in that notice was that the provider's response would be monitored; it does not establish a safeguarding breach at every branch.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. Attendance charges cover bookings from one to five days per week, giving families a choice between fewer weekly days and a full-week pattern. Fees are paid monthly in advance by direct debit.

The nursery operates throughout the year, closing for bank and public holidays, an inset day and the period between Christmas and New Year. These closures matter when matching nursery attendance to work commitments. Funded childcare uses sessions lasting 10 hours that begin at opening; attendance beyond that session is separately charged, and buying additional hours is not a condition of a funded place.

Getting There

The address is Grove House, Bagleys Lane, Fulham, London, SW6 2QB. Enquiries can be made by telephone on 020 3824 7089, and personal tours can be booked using the nursery's visit form.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is offered, with 15 Hrs and 30 Hrs entitlement arrangements set out in the fee structure. Funding is stretched over 50 weeks, while eligibility determines which arrangement applies to a family. Additional private hours sit separately from the funded entitlement. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, and a registration charge applies.

For private childcare, meals and snacks are included, as are nappies, wipes, nappy cream, formula and sun cream. Food is cooked on site by a chef and served in the dining room.

For funded hours, food has a separate, non-mandatory charge that is not a condition of taking a funded place; the nursery supplies the associated consumables. This distinction matters when comparing the cost of funded attendance with private childcare: funded hours and the total bill are different things.

Things to Consider

  • Organisational safeguarding action. The 22 June 2026 notice concerned group arrangements and set an August deadline. During a visit, ask how the required changes affect oversight, escalation of concerns and staff supervision at Fulham Wharf.
  • The pace of routines. In October 2023, long waits between activities and missed independence opportunities at lunch were improvement points. Ask how lunchtime and changes between activities are organised now.
  • Funded attendance costs. Funding is stretched across 50 weeks. Private childcare includes meals and snacks; funded hours carry a separate, non-mandatory food charge, and additional attendance hours are billed separately. Compare a written quotation for your intended days with the funded-session arrangement.

The Verdict

Fulham Wharf suits families considering fewer days each week or a full-week booking, and those comparing funded sessions with additional private hours. Its appeal lies in the separate creative spaces, age-divided garden and weekly outings for older children. The October 2023 judgement provides a positive dated assessment, but the June 2026 organisational safeguarding notice deserves weight in the decision. A visit should resolve the practical questions raised by that notice and the earlier findings about daily routines.
