Awesome Childcare Extended School Club Alexandra Primary

This is out-of-school care at Alexandra Primary School, not a conventional day nursery. It has capacity for 20 children, and the May 2024 Ofsted inspection covered children aged four to 11 attending after school and in school holidays. The provision met the requirements for early years provision.

The club's character in May 2024 came from choice and mixed-age company. Children could play inside or outside, use the hall for yoga and help younger children with small responsibilities. That breadth matters after a school day: children were able to be active, settle with quieter options or spend time with friends.

In May 2024, the group room provided a base for settling, breakfast and periods of rest. The playground and hall widened the choices, with physical play and calming yoga alongside activities in the main space. Staff planned around children's interests and adjusted the space so that children could take part and make choices.

The Early Years Foundation Stage means younger children develop communication, physical skills and personal confidence through purposeful play as well as care routines. Here, the experience observed in May 2024 was play-led rather than classroom-like: practitioners used discussion, choice, independence and new experiences to support children. A planned cinema outing was a strong example. Children helped establish the safety rules beforehand and confidently explained why those rules mattered.

Mixed-age interaction was another clear feature. Older children enjoyed helping younger children and carrying out small tasks, while children across the age range played well together. For families with a younger child, that offers a social setting shaped by school-age peers rather than a nursery room organised around one narrow age band.

Relationships were a strength of the provision in May 2024. Staff knew children individually, responded when reassurance or emotional support was needed and used praise to guide behaviour. Children listened closely, behaved exceptionally well together and showed a strong sense of belonging.

Communication linked the club, families and schools. In May 2024, staff passed on key messages to parents and worked with Alexandra Primary School, while also supporting continuity for children arriving from other schools. Supervision meetings covered staff training and wellbeing, and team meetings helped practitioners review their responsibilities.

Ofsted found safeguarding arrangements effective in May 2024. Staff understood how to identify and report concerns, all practitioners working with children held paediatric first-aid qualifications, and safer-recruitment checks were in place. Risk assessments, close supervision and regular head counts supported movement between the room, hall and playground.

The club operates from Alexandra Junior & Infant School, Western Road, London N22 6UH. Its out-of-school model is designed around school-age children, with 20 places in total. In May 2024, 40 children were on roll across different days and sessions; that historical roll figure is not the number present at once.

Awesome Childcare Extended School Club Alexandra Primary was purposeful but relaxed in May 2024. Yoga, outdoor choice, mixed-age responsibility and carefully prepared outings gave children more than somewhere to wait after school, while strong relationships and clear safety routines held the provision together.

It is best suited to families seeking school-age wraparound care and school-holiday provision, especially children who enjoy choosing between active, social and calmer experiences. Its broad age mix will appeal most where a child enjoys the company of both younger and older peers.
