At the 2023 inspection, children's interests shaped planning. Books were a clear thread: children chose stories from the reading corner, repeated words and linked them to pictures. The Gingerbread Man then moved beyond the page into related activities, including kneading ginger-scented dough, which introduced words such as ginger and flour while strengthening hands. Scissor work encouraged persistence, and songs, rhymes and a tambourine cue gave routines a playful structure.

Outdoor activity included tricycles and scooters. Trips to local shops, picnics in the park and visits from parents discussing paramedic and nursing work helped children connect their play with people and places in their community.

Relationships were a strength in March 2023. Staff knew children well, helped them settle and supported conflicts promptly. Home languages were used in greetings and play, helping children who spoke English as an additional language understand routines and develop communication.

Parents received regular progress updates and attended termly meetings with their child's key person. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that time: staff understood reporting routes, completed regular training, carried out daily risk assessments and supervised children effectively.

Two priorities remained. Staff needed to recognise more consistently when a child required help to engage deeply, and give children more chances to act independently rather than doing tasks for them.

In 2023, the preschool operated from 9am to 3.15pm, Monday to Friday in term time, plus an after-school club from 3.30pm to 6pm. It also recorded funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. Families should ask for the current session pattern and how funded hours are arranged before applying.

• Independence. Staff were asked to create more opportunities for children to do things themselves. Families may want to discuss how this priority now shapes cooking, self-care and everyday routines.
• Engagement. Inspectors found that children needing extra help did not always receive it soon enough to benefit fully from an activity. Ask how practitioners now identify and respond when a child hangs back.
