Three named rooms, a large garden and a daily programme that draws on Montessori and Forest School ideas give Greygates a clear identity. This independent Muswell Hill nursery works from a Victorian house at 182 Muswell Hill Road, London N10 3NG, caring for children from three months to five years. Its Bluebells, Buttercups and Sunflowers rooms create a defined path from baby care to pre-school.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good in June 2023. Children were found to be happy, secure and motivated to learn, with communication, literacy and broad experiences among the strongest threads. Weekly Outdoor Adventures, yoga, sports and vegetable growing make the curriculum more tangible than a generic list of activities.

Greygates only publishes full-day places, from 8am to 6pm on weekdays. Families must book at least two days each week and include either Monday or Friday, so this is a structured full-day model rather than a flexible session nursery.

Rooms and Ages

Bluebells is published for six babies from three to about 15 months, cared for by two team members. Its bright, airy play area includes books, puzzles, sensory materials and soft play. Sensory exploration and messy play are named parts of the day, while each child's key person plans individual next steps and helps maintain consistency between home and nursery.

Buttercups takes up to 20 toddlers aged about 16 to 33 months with five team members. Child-led learning runs through construction, role play, small-world resources, musical instruments and natural materials. Numbers, colours and letters are introduced through play. Direct access to a covered part of the garden supports free movement between indoor and outdoor activity, while staff also work with families on toilet training and behaviour.

Sunflowers is the largest classroom and sits upstairs. The nursery publishes room for up to 24 pre-school children with three team members. Confidence, independence and exploration lead the approach, supported by phonics, early reading, writing and personal, social and emotional learning. The upstairs location and room staffing are practical details to check against an individual child's needs.

Learning and Named Experiences

The curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, meaning staff plan across the learning, development and care expectations that apply before school. Greygates says weekly plans respond to each child's interests, then supplements that framework with Montessori and Forest School influences. A different class each morning adds a regular rhythm, while sports coaching and Outdoor Adventures in local woods broaden the setting beyond its classrooms.

The June 2023 inspection saw a strong emphasis on language. Staff talked, read and sang with children throughout the day and used picture cards to support routines and choices. Babies and toddlers handled books and enjoyed stories; older children retold favourites and showed drawing and writing. Staff also used children's interests and learning styles to plan varied experiences.

Mathematics was less consistent. The two published improvement points were to build mathematical knowledge more reliably during play and develop emotional literacy so children could understand feelings and moderate their actions more independently.

Outdoor and Community Life

The house is divided into three classrooms and has a very large garden. Outdoor play includes yoga, sports and growing vegetables, while the weekly Outdoor Adventures help children explore nature and the local area. The 2023 findings also recorded celebrations of important events, languages and cultures, giving children opportunities to connect experiences from home with nursery life.

Relationships and Communication

Key-person planning is explicit in the baby and toddler rooms. Individual weekly planning and advice for families are published, while staff were found to know children well. Parents valued regular progress updates and help with behaviour and oral hygiene. Workshops on childhood illness and school readiness, along with invitations to events and outings, add practical ways for families to take part.

Settling begins with consistency between home and nursery in Bluebells and continues through room transitions. Staff were seen praising kind behaviour, setting boundaries and helping children resolve disagreements. Pre-school children served their own food and drinks, one example of independence being built into ordinary routines rather than reserved for formal activities.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

In June 2023, staff identified children needing extra help and worked with parents and other professionals. Children with SEND and children learning English as an additional language were supported through conversation, songs, reading and visual prompts. Current adjustments need to be agreed for the individual child.

Ofsted found safeguarding arrangements effective at that inspection. Staff understood signs of harm and reporting procedures, while leaders checked suitability and supported continuing training. This is a dated inspection finding, not a substitute for asking about current safeguarding contacts and day-to-day practice.

Food is prepared by the nursery's own chef. The setting publishes homemade, balanced meals using ingredients including free-range meat and organic milk, and children were recorded enjoying healthy meals and trying new foods in 2023. The published material does not establish whether meals or non-food consumables are included for every type of funded or private place.

Sessions and Attendance

The published model is full days only, 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. A minimum of two days per week applies, and one booked day must be Monday or Friday. The nursery says it opens for 51 weeks, closing for bank holidays and at Christmas. Its terms also state that reducing attendance after the first three months requires eight weeks' written notice, subject to the stated conditions.

This structure will suit families seeking consistent full-day care. It will not suit those needing mornings, afternoons, half days or ad hoc hours, because Greygates does not publish those options.

Greygates has unusual specificity for a small independent nursery: three named rooms, published group sizes and staffing, a sizeable garden, morning classes and weekly Outdoor Adventures. The June 2023 Good judgement supports the picture of secure children, strong communication and thoughtful inclusion, while its two improvement points give families concrete questions rather than reasons for alarm.

This is best suited to families wanting consistent full-day care across at least two weekdays, with either Monday or Friday in the pattern, and who value a room-based path from baby care to pre-school. It is a poor fit for morning-only, afternoon-only or flexible-hour attendance. The decisive next step is to test the room transition, current funding breakdown and post-inspection work against the needs of the individual child.
