The Early Years Foundation Stage covers children’s communication, physical development, relationships, early literacy and mathematics through play and guided activity. Here, inspectors saw staff building vocabulary through visual aids and routines, introducing words such as calves, and weaving counting and comparative language into songs.

Mixed-age contact has practical purpose. Younger children gained confidence and formed friendships alongside older children, while the older group practised care and early leadership. Children also built self-reliance through ordinary tasks, including washing their hands, using cutlery and serving food with tongs.

Communication practice was less consistent. Inspectors found that practitioners did not always pitch conversations to a child's current communication skills, so some chances to move language forward were missed.

Warm key-person relationships helped children settle and engage at their own pace. Staff gave hesitant children time before joining group activities and responded sensitively when reassurance was needed.

Support for additional needs was concrete. Practitioners used pictures, gestures and targeted adult help, while a calm space, books and sensory resources gave children tools for managing strong feelings. Leaders worked with families and external professionals, and used additional funding to support language and emotional development.

Parents received information through conversations, photographs, observations and an online platform. Attendance was checked daily, with unexplained absences followed up by telephone.
