Woodside Children's Centre

Woodside Children's Centre combines energetic outdoor learning with close, patient relationships. Ofsted rated the provision Good at its May 2023 inspection, when children were happy, safe and keen to take part. The centre has capacity for 73 children aged two to four at 59 White Hart Lane in Wood Green.

The strongest thread is purposeful play. In May 2023, staff connected children's interests to sensory, physical and language-rich experiences, rather than laying out activities without a clear learning intention.

In May 2023, babies scooped and poured during sensory play, while older children experimented with cars and guttering. They changed the guttering's height, watched the cars speed up or slow down and used positional language as they worked together. Outdoor water play became a pretend car wash with toy buggies, so a familiar interest in vehicles carried problem-solving and conversation.

The dedicated forest school area added measured risk and physical challenge. Staff also modelled language and narrated play across the setting. This supports the Early Years Foundation Stage, which organises children’s learning across communication, physical and personal development as well as literacy, maths, understanding the world and expressive arts. In practice here, play and everyday routines became planned steps towards school.

Relationships were a clear strength in May 2023. Staff knew children well, helped them settle quickly and encouraged friendships. Family photographs and festivals representing children's heritage brought home lives into the setting, giving children visible points of connection.

Support for children with SEND and those receiving additional funding was judged effective. Staff identified needs, bought appropriate resources and arranged specialist support. Children also practised independence by serving lunch and pouring drinks.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective in May 2023. Staff understood signs of harm, reporting procedures and risk assessment. Parents described strong communication about learning and that staff helped with family changes and confidence before school.

The centre is in Wood Green and operates as full day care. In May 2023, sessions ran Monday to Friday from 8am to 5.45pm for most of the year. Funded early education was provided for two-, three- and four-year-olds at that time.

• Technology resources. A May 2023 improvement point called for toys and equipment that help children investigate how different technologies work. Families may want to discuss how this has developed since May 2023.
• Understanding behaviour. Staff generally set clear expectations, but explanations of unwanted behaviour were not always consistent. Ask how practitioners now help children recognise emotions and the effect of their actions.

The May 2023 findings point to thoughtful teaching, warm relationships and unusually vivid outdoor learning. The forest school area, vehicle-based water play and practical independence give the provision character. It is best suited to families seeking full-day care with plenty of physical play and a strong emphasis on language, inclusion and preparation for school.
