In February 2024, babies, toddlers and pre-school children used age-related areas for different stages of learning. Baby-room painting included hands, dabbing pads and chunky brushes, giving children at different stages an accessible route into mark-making. Toddlers joined songs through words and actions, while older children predicted what would happen next in familiar stories.

The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage: staff plan learning around children's development, interests and next steps rather than using one activity identically for every child. Inspectors found clear learning intentions and high expectations, but asked for more opportunities to develop numbers and counting across the age groups.

Every child had daily garden access in February 2024. Staff planned for their key children with clear intentions matched to different developmental stages. Older children laid coats on the floor and flipped them over their heads, then asked for help with buttons and zips when needed. It made dressing for outdoors part of learning rather than simply a transition. Group stories and songs also brought ages together: babies swayed to music, toddlers supplied words and actions, and older children anticipated the next part of familiar tales.

Settling was personalised with favourite toys, stories and songs. Parents supplied key words from home languages, which staff wrote phonetically; daily singing, familiar stories and words of the week then helped children learning English build confidence. Staff also identified developmental gaps and made prompt local-authority referrals, with parental consent, where children needed additional support. Staff considered each child's interests alongside clear learning intentions for different developmental stages. This gives the key-person relationship an educational purpose as well as an emotional one: observations can lead to a tailored activity, a shared progress discussion or an early referral.

Health learning was equally practical. Children brushed their teeth at nursery, discussed the two-minute routine and distinguished everyday healthy choices from occasional sweet foods. Behaviour expectations used books, displayed golden rules and the idea of kind hands.

A named key person gave parents a consistent point of contact. Staff completed the progress check at age two and shared it with families so it could support healthcare checks. Toilet training was approached jointly between home and nursery, allowing children to meet the same expectations in both places.
