Little Adventurers Nursery

Little Adventurers Nursery is a full-day-care setting for children aged six months to five years at 24 Severn Drive, Upminster. This is the Early Years Foundation Stage in practical form: play and adult guidance build communication, physical development, confidence and early understanding before school.

The local outings added substance. Visits to an allotment gave children a real growing project, including waiting for potatoes to be ready, while forest school visits supported independence and resilience. These were experiences recorded in August 2023 rather than promises about the current timetable.

There was an uneven edge in August 2023. Staff did not always stretch children's thinking or give every child enough scope to express an idea. One example involved babies receiving too little support to practise using spoons. Leaders were asked to sharpen monitoring so strong interactions became consistent across the setting.

Key-person relationships were a strength in August 2023. Children sought reassurance from familiar adults before returning to exploration, helping them settle emotionally and become ready to learn. Staff also used simple explanations during routines, such as explaining why shoes came off after garden play, turning care moments into opportunities for understanding.

Communication supported more than routines. Younger children copied everyday words while caring for a doll in the home corner, and older children explained how long remained before potatoes could be harvested. These examples show adults giving language a practical purpose. Choice mattered too: resources were arranged for children to investigate at their own pace, while familiar adults remained available as a secure base. For a child settling in, that balance can make independence manageable rather than abrupt.

Support included children with SEND and those learning English as an additional language. Staff worked with families and other professionals, and parents attended workshops and training to continue learning at home. Healthy routines covered handwashing and food adapted to dietary needs and preferences.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective at the August 2023 inspection. Staff understood reporting routes, leaders used suitability checks, and recruitment and induction were thorough.

The nursery is at 24 Severn Drive, Upminster, RM14 1SW. It accepts children from six months to five years and has 62 places in total. The broad age span makes the quality of transitions between younger and older groups a useful point for a visit. Continuity in key-person relationships and changes in routine are therefore important when children move between groups.

The inspected practice gives further questions for comparison. Adults encouraged handwashing alongside children and adapted food to dietary needs and preferences. Those care routines linked health with independence rather than treating meals and hygiene as interruptions to learning. The approach connected care with learning across the day, including support for self-feeding.

• Consistency of teaching. The August 2023 inspection asked leaders to improve monitoring because some interactions did not extend children's thinking. Ask what observation, coaching and review now show across age groups.
• Outdoor experiences. Allotment and forest school visits gave the inspected provision real local character. Families drawn to these should ask which age groups take part and how frequently they run now.

Little Adventurers Nursery had moved from Inadequate in February 2023 to Good by August that year. Warm key-person care, community outings and practical parent support sit alongside a clear improvement point about making teaching consistently probing.
