Romford United Reformed Church Playgroup

Children used real tools and resources to explore magnets, filled and emptied jugs to make a water spinner turn, and compared very soft and very loud sounds on instruments. Books mattered too. A story about a bunny searching for Easter eggs prompted attentive listening, new words and predictions, while mark-making materials developed dexterity for later writing.

Physical development extended outdoors, where play supported coordination and spatial awareness. Indoors, songs, actions and turn-taking linked movement with communication and self-control.

Relationships were a clear strength at that time. Children approached staff confidently for help, while practitioners knew their key children and built communication into ordinary moments such as snack time. In March 2023, support for children learning English as an additional language was especially effective.

Independence was practical rather than abstract: children put on their own coats and shoes, followed routines and treated adults and peers with respect. Parents told inspectors that staff supported the transition to school well. Safeguarding arrangements were judged effective, with regular training, reviewed procedures, risk assessment and staff deployment contributing to close supervision.

The playgroup is at Romford United Reformed Church, 58 Western Road, Romford RM1 3LP. It is sessional day care rather than a full-day nursery.
