In practice, it means play and guided activities build several connected skills rather than treating subjects as separate lessons. Staff joined those areas through books and practical activities. Older children recalled and ordered story events, while younger children joined action songs and repeated phrases. That differentiation gave both age groups a route into the same material. Language support included gestures and objects of reference, while number vocabulary was woven through play rather than saved for a formal group task.

Daily routines also carried learning. Children sang the tidy-up time song before moving to circle time, recited the days of the week and discussed the weather. They requested favourite songs and combined singing with actions, so communication and physical participation worked together. Staff adapted activities for different developmental stages and used size and number language during the Goldilocks work. The wider programme was demanding but accessible, using engaging tasks to move each child forward.

Relationships were a strength in September 2023. Children separated from parents quickly, formed secure bonds with responsive staff and managed changes between play and group routines with little help. They knew what came next, moved to the carpet with little adult direction and helped one another remember the tidying routine. Parents described support with toilet training, healthy eating and applications for school places. Some had returned with younger siblings, which adds useful context to the positive feedback recorded at the time.

Children with SEND had individual learning goals devised with parents. A small sensory area offered quieter space for children sensitive to sound, while work with the local authority and health professionals brought shared strategies around each child. Early identification was built into practice rather than left until difficulties became entrenched. Staff also used gestures, familiar objects and words from home to help communication, including home-language words for children learning English as an additional language.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective. Staff understood referral procedures and specific risks, including the Prevent duty and county lines, with training refreshed through induction and professional development. Vetting and suitability checks were completed for staff. Leaders invested in the team’s skills through continuing development and practical guidance. This matters because the nursery’s improvement points depend on staff applying communication and praise consistently, not only on strong planning.
