Berkeley Pre-School

At a Glance

A grass hill, an outdoor shop and group rooms for stories gave Berkeley Pre-School a practical, playful character in June 2023. Based at Berkeley Primary School in Hounslow, it has capacity for 52 children. At its June 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good overall.

Children attending then were aged two to four. The strongest detail is the connection between play and learning: physical challenges outdoors, conversation during pretend shopping and hands-on preparation for writing.

The Nursery Experience

In June 2023, children could move freely between the indoor space and a large outdoor area, while separate group spaces supported storytelling and sensory exploration. Outdoors, scooters, tunnels and the grass hill gave children different ways to practise movement and balance.

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, its everyday expression in June 2023 included using pipettes and squeezing sponges to develop hand control, making dough and tracing letters in sand. These activities linked enjoyable play with the physical preparation for writing.

Number learning also involved movement: children aimed beanbags at numbered targets and traced shapes. In the outdoor shop, adults expanded children's vocabulary during pretend purchases, helping them build longer sentences from their own ideas.

Care and Support

At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and that collaboration with outside professionals supported expected progress, including for children with SEND and those learning English as an additional language.

In June 2023, staff knew families well and set individual learning targets. Children's home languages and cultures were recognised alongside English, giving their family experience a place in the day. Parents received newsletters and everyday updates, with guidance on supporting communication at home.

Health learning was practical too. In June 2023, children practised toothbrushing and tasted fruit at snack time, while books and posters helped explain balanced eating.

Practical Information

The address is Berkeley Primary School, Cranford Lane, Hounslow, TW5 9HQ. In June 2023, attendance was during school terms, Monday to Friday, with morning sessions from 8.45am to 11.45am or afternoon sessions from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

At that time, the pre-school received funding for free early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. These were sessional arrangements, rather than a single continuous day.

Being based on Berkeley Primary School's premises does not guarantee a Reception place. Families still use the local authority's school admissions process.

Things to Consider

  • Group-time consistency. In June 2023, expectations about listening and paying attention were not reinforced consistently during group sessions, leaving some children distracted. A visit should explore how staff now help children participate throughout these sessions.
  • Term-time sessions. The June 2023 pattern offered separate mornings and afternoons during school terms. What attendance pattern and funded-hours arrangements would apply to your child now?

The Verdict

Berkeley Pre-School's June 2023 picture suits families considering either morning or afternoon preschool attendance: active outdoor play, language developed through conversation and practical preparation for writing. The group-time weakness matters, especially for children who need clear reminders to sustain attention. Its strongest appeal is the way ordinary play became purposeful learning.
