Staff translated close knowledge of children into action. They adjusted encouragement to the child, used communication aids with precision and gave less-confident children purposeful support to express themselves.

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the areas of learning and development that shape early-years provision. Here, the February 2024 inspection found a broad curriculum made concrete through conversation, early writing, stories and outdoor problem-solving.

Visual cards and sign language helped children contribute during group time, while staff paused to check understanding rather than rushing on. Boys had developed an enthusiasm for early writing. Outdoors, the mud kitchen and muddy-puddle play gave children reasons to persist, think through problems and judge when they needed help.

Experiences stretched beyond familiar play. Visits involving a therapy dog and farm animals introduced some children to hands-on contact with animals and taught them how to behave safely around them.

Emotional support was unusually specific. Staff recognised that praise settled some children, while an interest box helped others redirect difficult feelings. Children formed strong attachments to staff and began reminding one another to share without adult prompting.

Staff identified children at risk of falling behind, including those with language or social difficulties and children learning English as an additional language. Extra help was matched to those starting points. When a medical condition became known, staff completed relevant specialist training. Safeguarding arrangements were judged effective, supported by recruitment checks and regular testing of staff knowledge.
