Base Zero Bellingham

At a Glance

Vegetable growing, sensory exploration and books to borrow give Base Zero Bellingham a practical, hands-on character. At its August 2024 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall. The strongest thread in that account is the connection between children's play and learning carried into the home.

Based on Randlesdown Road in London, the nursery has capacity for 69 children aged 0 to 60 months. Capacity describes the whole setting, rather than the size of an individual group.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: everyday play supports communication, physical development and other areas of learning.

In August 2024, older children explored vegetable growing by breaking up soil and adding water, giving staff opportunities to discuss texture and change. Babies investigated sensory materials. Stories supported imaginative play, with objects helping children engage with books; staff introduced vocabulary during activities and allowed time for answers.

Physical activity had concrete variety at that visit. Babies used ride-on toys and practised throwing balls, while older children tackled balancing blocks, tunnels and bicycles. These experiences gave children different ways to practise coordination and movement.

Mathematics needed more breadth. In August 2024, counting featured in play, but opportunities to explore measures, spatial ideas and shapes were less consistent. Routines also interrupted learning, especially the move indoors after garden play and bathroom transitions.

Care and Support

At the August 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described a special educational needs coordinator working with families and making referrals for additional help. This provided a specific route for addressing children's needs.

In August 2024, settling visits and information gathered from families helped staff get to know children. Conversations about feelings, encouragement and turn-taking supported everyday relationships. Children also practised independence through dressing in aprons, preparing tables and serving lunch.

Parent communication included termly reviews and home-learning resources at that visit. Termly reviews shared learning priorities; workshops, summer play sessions, fine-motor activity packs and books to borrow connected nursery experiences with home. Summer sessions included children attending only in term time, giving those families another opportunity to take part.

Practical Information

The address is 109a Randlesdown Road, London SE6 3HB. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and the nursery operates across the year.

In August 2024, the nursery received funding for free early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated account of funding participation, rather than a promise of a funded place.

Things to Consider

  • Changes between activities. August 2024 findings identified interruptions around bathroom routines and returning indoors. On a visit, ask how these transitions now preserve children's engagement.
  • Mathematics beyond counting. The August 2024 improvement priority covered a broader mathematical vocabulary. Look for examples of measures, spatial ideas and shapes within play.
  • The cost of your attendance pattern. Before choosing this nursery, ask for a written quotation covering your intended hours, funded entitlement, meals and consumables.

The Verdict

Base Zero Bellingham suits families who value practical exploration and a connection between nursery learning and home activities. Vegetable growing, movement play and lending books make that character tangible in its August 2024 account. The balancing considerations are equally concrete: smoother daily transitions and broader mathematical experiences were the priorities for improvement.
