Play, practical independence and relationships give Diadems Day Nursery its character. At 131 Deptford High Street in London, SE8 4NS, it has capacity for 40 children, with an age range of 0 to 60 months. Its current curriculum combines adult-planned activities with opportunities for children to choose their own play, rather than treating learning as a separate part of the day.
At its June 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. That is a dated judgement. The everyday examples from that visit are useful: children investigated faulty paint sprayers, used timers to negotiate turns and practised doing things for themselves.
Weekday opening runs from 7.30am to 6.30pm, with flexible childcare options and an all-year schedule interrupted by bank holidays and a Christmas closure.
The Early Years Foundation Stage framework guides the curriculum: children learn through play and daily routines, developing communication, physical skills and independence. Activities take account of each child's interests and development, while observations help staff decide what to introduce next. This gives the day a purpose beyond keeping children occupied.
In June 2022, conversation ran through songs, stories and practical activities. Toothbrushing discussions introduced vocabulary connected with oral health, while a problem with paint sprayers prompted children to consider possible repairs. These were everyday opportunities to talk, test ideas and make decisions, rather than separate lessons.
Physical development also took different forms in June 2022. Babies explored toys operated by buttons, while older children experimented with writing shopping lists. The contrast matters: activities addressed different stages of development rather than expecting every child to join the same task in the same way.
In June 2022, the garden contained bikes and a climbing frame, giving children opportunities to move, climb and play together. Paint activities involved mixing colours and making prints with hands and feet.
Outings planned in June 2022 included train journeys and opportunities to see landmarks. These experiences extended children's understanding beyond the nursery. They should be read as examples from that period, rather than a current timetable of trips.
Individual settling is part of the SEND policy: children have a settling period shaped around their needs. Current parent communication includes regular updates, and the curriculum connects nursery learning with support at home. For families, that relationship matters most when information helps them understand both the child's day and the next steps in their development.
In June 2022, babies and toddlers sought comfort from familiar staff, and personal care was handled sensitively. Children who became upset received reassurance before returning to play. Older children practised serving food, managing coats and washing their hands, linking care routines with growing independence and preparation for school.
Communication was also an improvement point in June 2022: daily updates did not consistently explain children's learning or progress. Another concern was that staff did not make enough use of everyday interactions to explore children's home languages and cultural backgrounds. Both deserve attention when judging how well nursery life reflects an individual child.
The SEND policy sets out a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review involving parents, the key person and the SENCO. Support is agreed around the child's needs, with a review date and consultation with relevant professionals where appropriate. This describes a practical route for organising support, rather than a general promise that every need will be met.
Parents participate in evaluating the effect of support, and the policy includes liaison with professionals when children move to another setting or school. The useful point is continuity: information about a child's needs can inform the next stage, alongside the family's own knowledge of what helps.
Diadems operates at Deptford Our Lady Of Assumption Rc Church, 131 Deptford High Street, London, SE8 4NS. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. It operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and one week at Christmas.
Flexible childcare options are offered. Opening hours describe the operating window; families need an agreed attendance arrangement within it. Enquiries can be made by telephone on 0203 795 8222 or by email at office@diademsdaynursery.co.uk.
Government-funded childcare is supported for eligible children, subject to the relevant eligibility rules and how funded hours fit the attendance arrangement. Parents apply through the appropriate government channels and share approved funding details with the nursery. Changes to eligibility or funding codes also need to be communicated.
Funded hours cover early education; meals, extra sessions and extended hours may attract additional charges. Meals and snacks are supplied daily. Current prices and the charges attached to a proposed schedule should be set out in the nursery's written quotation before a family commits.
Diadems suits families seeking play-based early education with flexible attendance and routines that build independence. The June 2022 examples give substance to that approach: practical problem-solving, garden play and children taking increasing responsibility for everyday tasks.
The decision should also give weight to communication. Knowing what a child ate or enjoyed is useful; understanding what they are learning is more useful still. Progress discussions and meaningful inclusion of home languages are the clearest points to explore alongside the proposed attendance arrangement.
Ofsted rated it Good at the inspection on 28 June 2022. Improvement points concerned children's home languages and cultures, and communication with parents about learning and progress.
The age range is 0 to 60 months, with capacity for 40 children in total.
