Little Cherubs Nursery & Preschool Sydenham

Four classrooms across three floors give Little Cherubs Sydenham a clear journey from a three-month-old baby's first nursery routines to preschool independence. Bright Beginnings, Tiny Tots, Little Learners and Shooting Stars each mark a developmental stage.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good in July 2024, finding effective safeguarding alongside a calm baby room, strong support for communication and self-care, effective key-person relationships and secure premises. Preschool transitions were the main area to improve because waiting and interruptions sometimes reduced useful play time.

This is a family-run setting at 2A Bell Green Lane, Sydenham, SE26 5TB. Its strongest character comes from practical, play-based learning: toddlers mixed lemons, herbs and vegetables in sensory play, older children experimented with colour through play dough, and outdoor activity took place twice each day in July 2024.

Rooms and Ages

Bright Beginnings covers three to 12 months. The room provides a calm environment, with individual feeding, sleep and comfort routines, sensory play, tummy time, music and stories. Separate cot rooms allow rest to sit apart from active play, while in 2024 newly arrived babies were secure enough to explore.

Tiny Tots is for children from 12 to 24 months, with stories, songs, active play and adult interaction supporting early language and friendships. Little Learners covers ages two to three. In July 2024, toddlers explored texture and scent through real-ingredient sensory play, combining fruit, herbs and vegetables in sustained investigation.

Shooting Stars takes children from three until five. Independence becomes more explicit here. Children practise pouring water and clearing plates, while conversation throughout the day builds language for the move to school. The four-room progression is easy for parents to understand, although the exact daily group size in each classroom is an important visit question.

Learning and Named Experiences

Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which means communication, physical development, relationships, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creativity are developed through play and everyday routines rather than formal lessons. The Little Cherubs curriculum road map adds a programme centred on early language, social communication, self-regulation and school readiness. Its published pedagogy draws on Reggio Emilia, the Curiosity Approach and Steiner principles, with practitioners expected to extend children's thinking through questions and collaboration.

Examples from July 2024 make that approach tangible. Babies worked on core strength by pulling themselves upright. Older children pinched different colours of play dough together, strengthening the hand muscles needed for later writing. Children also created self-portraits while discussing different skin tones and hair types, and Bastille Day joined the event calendar to recognise French heritage represented among attending families.

Outdoor time carries a strong physical emphasis. In July 2024, older children went outside twice daily for digging, sand, ball play and group games. These are simple experiences, but they combine movement, cooperation and listening in ways that matter more than a long list of loosely connected activities.

Relationships and Communication

Each child has a key person, and complimentary settling-in sessions take place before the official start date. Practitioners use these short visits to learn the child's routines, interests and preferences. Parent Zone then provides daily updates about personal care, meals and activities, alongside photographs and videos, while parent meetings and statutory progress checks give development a more formal review point.

Key-person arrangements were effective in July 2024. Small-group and targeted activities produced positive outcomes, parents valued staff knowledge of their families, and room moves were handled with communication between home and nursery. This continuity matters in a building where children progress through four classrooms rather than remaining in one mixed-age space.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Each setting has a SENCO, and the published approach combines early identification, personalised strategies and work with families and external professionals. In July 2024, children with special educational needs and disabilities were carefully monitored, with leaders seeking specialist assessment and services where needed. Liaison with future schools supported transition, but it does not confer any admissions priority.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective in July 2024. The premises were secure, indoor and garden risk assessments were routine, and children learned practical safety such as managing the stairs and following nursery rules. Staff supervision, meetings and training days were also frequent, giving leaders repeated opportunities to review practice.

Sessions and Attendance

The nursery opens Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm. The published attendance rule requires at least two booked days each week, with either Monday or Friday included in the regular pattern. The nursery closes on bank holidays, between Christmas and New Year and for up to three staff training days annually.

Admissions can begin with a virtual tour, brochure, telephone or Zoom call, or an open evening. In-person open evenings are scheduled once each half term subject to the nursery's arrangements. Registration is followed by the complimentary settling visits.

Funding and Paid Extras

Little Cherubs Sydenham participates in the funded entitlements for eligible children from nine months, two years, and three and four years. Both the 15-hour and 30-hour arrangements are offered over 38 term-time weeks; the other 14 weeks are charged at the normal daily rate. Families should use the fees and funding page and request a written calculation for their child's age and schedule.

For private hours, the Sydenham full-day fee does not include nappies or wipes, so parents provide these. For funded hours for three- and four-year-olds, food, non-food consumables and listed activities are charged separately, with families able to provide a cold packed lunch under the nursery's guidelines and opt out of activities. The activity category includes Sports 4 Tots, languages, yoga, Drama Llamas, Boogie Mites, science lab, animal visits and seasonal events.

• Preschool transitions. In July 2024, changes between activities sometimes left children waiting or interrupted experiences including Boogie Mats. Ask how the current timetable protects sustained play around snacks, handwashing and outdoor moves.
• Three-floor layout. Sydenham's four classrooms span three floors. Families should see the relevant room and understand how stairs, outdoor access and room transitions work for their child.
• Funded-hours extras. Food, consumables and activities have separate positions on funded hours for three- and four-year-olds. Compare the written termly calculation with the exact days required.
• Attendance rule. A weekly booking requires at least two days and must include Monday or Friday. This will narrow the workable pattern for some families.
