Little Learners Playgroup

At a Glance

Serving themselves at mealtimes, clearing a space and putting toys away were part of learning at Little Learners Playgroup in September 2025. Independence ran through everyday routines, giving children practical tasks alongside their play. This is a small setting at Brandram Road Community Centre in London, with capacity for 25 children.

At its September 2025 inspection, Ofsted judged the provision Good and safeguarding effective. Children attending then were aged two to four. The strengths came with two clear priorities: making group activities more engaging and improving the sequence of early literacy teaching.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets expectations for children's learning, development and care, bringing learning and everyday care into the same framework. In September 2025, children chose activities for themselves as well as taking part in adult-led learning; their experiences included imaginative play, sensory exploration and outdoor activities.

Small movements mattered too. In September 2025, handling pipe cleaners and using glue sticks gave children opportunities to develop coordination, while making marks supported early writing. Picture cards helped younger children explore feelings. Stories included acting out events, giving children another way to participate beyond listening.

Physical activity had a regular place in the September 2025 routine. Daily sessions practised catching and throwing, with activities adjusted to children's development; a football coach visited weekly to work on kicking, scoring and taking turns. These offered concrete opportunities to practise movement and cooperation.

Group learning was less consistent. In September 2025, some children lost interest and became restless during shared activities. Letter names and sounds were also sometimes introduced in an unsuitable order. Enthusiastic storytelling and a carefully sequenced introduction to reading are different things, and both matter.

Care and Support

At the September 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that the key-person arrangement supported early intervention and that staff worked with families and outside professionals to tailor support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). This gave support a practical basis: observations informed planning, rather than every child receiving the same activity unchanged.

In September 2025, staff used timers and visual prompts to help children share and wait for a turn, and offered comfort when children were upset. Families received information about planned learning and ideas to continue it at home. Parent workshops addressed nutrition and sugary drinks, while reminders to drink water formed part of the daily routine.

Practical Information

The address is Brandram Road Community Centre, Brandram Road, London SE13 5RT.

In September 2025, opening hours were 8.30am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday, during term time. The setting also offered government-funded childcare for eligible children at that time. These are dated operating arrangements, rather than a promise of today's attendance or funding terms.

Things to Consider

  • Group activities. In September 2025, shared activities did not hold every child's attention consistently. On a visit, ask how these activities now accommodate children who disengage.
  • Early literacy. The September 2025 priority was a more consistent, developmentally appropriate sequence for early reading. Ask how letter sounds and names are introduced now.
  • Attendance fit. The September 2025 opening pattern covered four weekdays in term time. What attendance patterns and funded-hours arrangements can the nursery offer your family now?

The Verdict

Little Learners Playgroup merits consideration for families seeking preschool care with an emphasis on practical independence and active play. The September 2025 picture combines supportive relationships, everyday responsibilities and regular physical activity with specific weaknesses in group engagement and early literacy. Those teaching priorities deserve attention alongside the Good judgement.
