Busy Bees London ExCel

At a Glance

Three outdoor spaces and a Dedicated Sensory Room give Busy Bees London ExCel a clear physical identity opposite ExCeL London. The building is on one level, with five rooms arranged for different stages of childhood. Outdoor play has a substantial place here, while the sensory room gives children another space to use beyond their usual room.

At its September 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. The main reservations concerned the youngest children's opportunities to develop speech, excessive dummy use and the teaching of everyday hygiene. Those points matter alongside the positive judgement, especially for families choosing baby care.

The nursery has 107 places in total and accepts children from 3 months to 60 months. Full days, mornings and afternoons offer different ways to organise attendance, rather than requiring every family to book the whole working day.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning and care: development takes place through play, conversation, movement and everyday routines. Alongside that framework, the group-wide Bee Curious curriculum connects planned experiences with children's interests and their pace of development. Its practical ingredients include imaginative play, stories, creative work and outdoor learning.

Early literacy involves making marks, storytelling and phonics; early mathematics includes patterns, counting and solving problems. These are activities children can take part in, rather than abstract curriculum promises. Guided group experiences also give children opportunities to practise paying attention and listening to others.

The baby day includes exploring textures and colours, outdoor activity and quieter periods for a story or sleep. Naps follow children's routines at home. For toddlers and preschool children, the day includes songs, sensory or learning activities and time exploring nature outdoors. Quiet play or a nap follows lunch, allowing the afternoon to accommodate rest as well as activity.

In September 2024, older children selected mathematics equipment themselves and devised a game involving sequences of shapes. Toddlers and older children shared their ideas in conversation with practitioners. The youngest children's group activities were less consistently organised, however, and staff development needed to build more precisely on practitioners' existing skills in supporting early language.

Outdoor and Community Life

Each room connects with secure garden space, allowing children to move between indoor and outdoor play during the day. The three outdoor spaces are a useful part of the setting's design: movement and exploration need not be confined to an indoor activity area.

In September 2024, practitioners helped young children practise pedalling bicycles outside, while a planned yoga activity introduced other children to different poses. These examples show physical learning at different stages, from controlling a bicycle to following a movement sequence. They are snapshots of the day at that time, rather than promises of a particular weekly timetable.

Care and Support

At the September 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that children formed relationships with key persons who understood their preferences, and that staff worked with other agencies to provide targeted support for children with SEND. For parents, the useful detail is the connection between knowing an individual child and adapting what happens around them.

In September 2024, practitioners gathered information from parents before children started and used it to plan activities. Families also received advice about toilet training. Those exchanges linked care at home with care at nursery, rather than treating the two as separate routines.

Sleep received individual attention in September 2024. Staff noticed tiredness, comforted children gently and monitored them while resting; most woke in their own time. The current baby routine also accommodates naps in line with home life, which makes sleep part of planning the day.

Communication continues through the Busy Bees App, the group-wide service used here for updates about children's progress. This gives parents a way to follow nursery life between conversations with staff. It complements the personal relationship with the child's key person.

There are specific cautions around everyday care. In September 2024, babies kept dummies in their mouths beyond the periods needed for comfort, reducing chances to practise speech. Practitioners also sometimes took too long to respond to runny noses, missing opportunities to teach hygiene through immediate, practical action. Families with younger children should weigh those observations carefully.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is 5 Western Gateway, Royal Victoria Docks, London E16 1XL. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year. The booking choices are a Full Day from 8am to 6pm, a Morning from 8am to 1pm, or an Afternoon from 1pm to 6pm; a Full Week runs Monday to Friday within the same daily hours.

The minimum weekly booking is one full day or two morning or afternoon sessions. Care is booked by session rather than by the hour. That gives families a clear choice between a shorter day and a whole-day pattern, but a brief hourly booking is not part of the model.

Bank holidays and two staff training days are closures for which normal charges apply. Illness and holidays do not attract refunds, credits or session exchanges. Fees are paid monthly in advance, so the cost planning extends beyond the days a child physically attends.

The branch contact form provides an enquiry route, and visits can be booked online. These are practical starting points for arranging attendance around the session choices.

Getting There

On-site parking is provided, and Royal Victoria and Custom House stations connect the area with the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and Elizabeth line. Those named connections make the location relevant to families combining nursery attendance with travel across East London.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare and privately paid care are both offered. The branch's funding arrangements cover the 15 hours and 30 hours schemes, subject to eligibility, with funded hours stretched across 51 weeks; additional attendance beyond the entitlement is charged separately. A non-funded week and a further non-funded day also form part of the charging calendar, so stretched funding does not mean every attendance day is funded.

Private session fees include food, snacks and drinks; the nursery chef cooks on site, using two seasonal menus accredited by NHS Startwell. For funded sessions, meals and snacks carry separate optional charges, as do consumables including nappies, wipes and sun cream, through the group-wide Busy Bees One package.

A non-refundable registration charge applies to private care, with part credited to the first invoice after starting. Fully funded places require a refundable deposit credited to that first invoice; the deposit is waived for children using the local authority's 15-hour funding scheme for two-year-olds. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the funding and fees calculator gives illustrative estimates rather than a personalised price.

Things to Consider

  • Baby communication. September 2024 findings raised both early-language teaching and prolonged dummy use. On a visit, ask how baby activities and comfort routines now protect opportunities for children to communicate.
  • Everyday hygiene. Responses to runny noses were inconsistent in September 2024. Ask how practitioners turn daily care into habits children can learn and practise.
  • Funded-session costs. Food and consumables have optional charges separate from funded hours. Ask for a written breakdown for your chosen sessions, including the non-funded dates and the arrangements for declining the package.
  • Dietary needs. The nursery accommodates dietary requirements and cultural preferences through alternatives. Allergy-affected families should confirm current preparation and serving arrangements before joining.

The Verdict

Busy Bees London ExCel suits families seeking either full-day attendance or morning and afternoon sessions, with outdoor access, a sensory room and transport connections shaping its appeal. Its practical offer is clear enough to compare against a working week. For parents of babies, the September 2024 concerns about communication, dummy use and hygiene deserve close attention alongside the facilities and care arrangements.
