Little Diamonds, Forest Gate

At a Glance

Separate spaces for meals, art and physical play give Little Diamonds, Forest Gate a character beyond the conventional playroom. Based at Field Community Centre, the nursery has a Big Hall for active play, a Creative Area for making and experimenting, and a Dining Room beside the kitchen. Children move between spaces during their day. That makes the layout part of the experience, rather than simply a backdrop.

The nursery accepts children aged 3 to 60 months and has 90 places in total. At its April 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the provision Good and found safeguarding effective, with appropriate support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities through work with external agencies. Those findings describe that visit, rather than a fresh assessment of today's practice.

Full-day childcare is offered, with weekday opening hours from 7.30am to 6.30pm. The strongest reasons to consider this setting are its different activity spaces, practical learning and outdoor experiences; the main questions concern how consistently staff turn those opportunities into purposeful learning.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The Baby Room is designed for the 0–18-month stage, with resources selected for early exploration and sensory stimulation; the nursery's overall intake starts at 3 months. The Big Hall provides space for physical activity and assemblies, while the Creative Area supports art, craft and children's own ideas. Big Room is a general play space.

These spaces serve different purposes. Children are not expected to spend the whole day eating, resting and playing in one room, and the separate dining arrangement gives meals their own setting. For parents, that is a useful distinction: the nursery day involves changes of activity and surroundings, rather than one room doing every job.

Learning and Activities

EYFS provides the framework for learning through play, covering children's communication, physical development, relationships and later learning. Planned activities sit alongside play that children choose themselves. Home experiences also inform activity planning, giving practitioners a starting point in something a child already knows.

The Reggio Emilia approach informs the nursery's aims, with natural materials and real objects used in learning and adults working alongside children as guides. The practical point is the place given to children's ideas: exploration and making are part of learning, rather than rewards after it.

Cooking and baking bring practical maths into the day, while printing, cutting and making marks offer ways to develop hand control and creative expression. Children also help prepare for meals and clear tables afterwards. These are small responsibilities with a clear purpose: taking part in looking after the spaces they use.

In April 2023, babies explored a ball pond, while older children made and manipulated play dough. Storytelling also extended into pretend play around The Tiger Who Came to Tea. These examples show the variety of experiences at that time, from sensory movement to language and imaginative play.

Outdoor and Community Life

The Garden has outdoor play equipment and supports activity in different weather conditions. Visits to local shops, parks, the library and children's centres are also organised. They connect nursery experiences with familiar community places, giving children more to talk about and draw on in their play.

Forest school adds hands-on outdoor learning through den-making, supervised fire activities, cooking outdoors and learning to handle tools safely. In April 2023, children attended a local forest school each week. That frequency belongs to the inspection period; the practical outdoor activities remain part of the nursery's activity offer.

Care and Support

Separate sleep rooms for babies and toddlers give rest its own space, alongside dedicated sensory rooms. This is a useful physical arrangement for families weighing how a busy childcare day accommodates quiet time. It also reinforces the distinction between active play and rest.

In April 2023, a sensory room contained resources children could touch and look at, and families exchanged information with staff through an online app. Practitioners also shared ideas for extending learning at home. The communication went beyond a simple account of what children had done: parents had ways to contribute information and continue activities themselves.

There were two important weaknesses in April 2023. Staff did not always make the intended learning clear in their interactions, and some agency practitioners lacked a clear understanding of their duties. The improvement priorities were therefore about everyday delivery and staff induction, rather than adding more equipment or activities. Families should give those points proper weight alongside the Good judgement.

Meals are prepared on site by a chef, with the kitchen beside the Dining Room and separated from it by a hatch. Children also have daily opportunities to cook, so food preparation and eating have places within the nursery routine.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Field Community Centre, 147 Station Road, Forest Gate, London E7 0AE. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, and the attendance offer includes full-day childcare. The nursery operates across the year, with closures at Christmas and on bank holidays.

The opening window is useful for planning work and travel, but it is distinct from an agreed booking. The Forest Gate contact form provides an enquiry route, and the branch can also be contacted on 0208 519 1919. Families should assess the actual attendance arrangement alongside the daily activities and care spaces, rather than judging the nursery by its closing time alone.

Things to Consider

  • Learning in practice. In April 2023, staff needed a clearer understanding of the learning they intended to develop. During a visit, ask how a practitioner builds on a child's chosen activity and identifies the next step.
  • Agency staff induction. Some agency practitioners were unclear about their responsibilities in April 2023. Ask how temporary staff are introduced to routines and children's individual needs.
  • Attendance and total cost. Full-day care sits within a weekday opening window of 7.30am to 6.30pm. Request a written quotation for your intended pattern, including the treatment of meals and non-food consumables and any funded hours.

The Verdict

Little Diamonds, Forest Gate suits families seeking full-day childcare with practical activities and separate spaces for art, movement, meals and rest. The Garden and forest school activities strengthen that hands-on character. There is plenty here for children to do.

The April 2023 Good judgement provides a useful starting point, but the curriculum and agency-staff improvement priorities deserve attention when choosing. The decisive question is how well practitioners use the setting's spaces and activities to respond to each child, day after day.
