An orangery and a large outdoor learning area give Smilers Day Nursery, Gants Hill its clearest character: space for children to investigate, experiment and learn beyond the usual indoor activities. Based at Park House in Valentines Park, the nursery accepts children aged 3 to 60 months. Its outdoor space is designed for exploring the natural world, making the surroundings part of the learning rather than simply somewhere to burn off energy.
At its August 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective. That judgement sits alongside two practical improvement points: reducing paperwork so key persons could spend more time with children, and making planned meals consistently balanced. Both matter to the everyday experience families are choosing.
The early years foundation stage provides the required framework for children's learning, development and care: play supports communication, physical skills and relationships as well as early understanding of the world. Here, the most detailed examples of that learning come from August 2022, when activities connected language, number work and practical exploration.
During that month, mathematical ideas were introduced through ordinary experiences rather than kept apart from the rest of the day. Songs and stories gave children repeated opportunities to hear and use language. Older children discussed their activities with adults, including describing the consistency of dough and deciding whether it needed more flour. The value is concrete: children practise explaining an idea while doing something that interests them.
Books also prompted children to remember and retell familiar stories. In August 2022, staff planned learning around what children could already do and their next steps. This gave the activities a purpose beyond keeping children occupied, while leaving room for their choices and interests.
The orangery adds another substantial physical space, while the outdoor learning area supports experiments and discoveries about nature. For a child who enjoys investigating materials and their surroundings, this is an appealing part of the setting's offer.
In August 2022, garden play included a construction activity where children worked with sand and bricks to build a house. A digging area provided another practical experience, with adults helping children handle large spades safely. These examples brought physical activity and problem-solving together. Children also spent substantial time outside, practising movement and coordination through play.
Cultural celebrations formed part of nursery life in August 2022, drawing on information families shared about their backgrounds. Children could make choices about activities, and planning avoided assumptions based on gender. The emphasis was on allowing children to explore their interests.
Relationships deserve as much attention as the garden. In August 2022, settling arrangements helped children become familiar with nursery life, and key persons knew individual preferences, abilities and dislikes. Children sought adults out for closeness during stories as well as joining them in play. For families considering a first separation, those are useful examples of how relationships worked at that time.
At the August 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that staff worked closely with families of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and that adult interactions supported children's progress from their different starting points. This is a dated assessment of practice, rather than a promise about an individual child's future experience.
Communication in August 2022 combined daily conversations with pictures and updates through a parent app. That gave families both a chance to discuss immediate concerns and a way to see activities from their child's day. Children were also encouraged to do more for themselves at mealtimes, making care routines opportunities to practise independence.
Food needs a balanced reading. In August 2022, children generally ate healthy meals, but menu planning did not consistently receive enough attention to ensure nutritional balance. The improvement request was specific to that consistency.
Smilers Day Nursery, Gants Hill is at Park House, Valentines Park, Perth Road, Ilford, IG2 6EA. It opens throughout the year, Monday to Friday, from 8am to 6pm. That opening window provides a useful starting point for comparing the nursery with a family's working day.
The Gants Hill contact details are 020 8518 3888 and hello@smilersnursery.co.uk. These belong to the Park House branch.
In August 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. This describes participation at that date. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Smilers suits families looking for a nursery with substantial outdoor learning space and an orangery, especially children who enjoy practical exploration. The August 2022 examples give that physical offer substance: construction, digging, stories and conversation all had a place in the day.
The Good judgement is useful, but so are its accompanying improvement points. Families should weigh the outdoor offer alongside how key-person time and menu planning work now. Those everyday details will shape a child's experience as much as the setting's spaces.
