Bright Horizons Teddington Cedar Road Day Nursery and Preschool

At a Glance

A Victorian school building and a garden with separate areas for different ages give Cedar Road its character. Bright Horizons Teddington Cedar Road Day Nursery and Preschool cares for children from 3 months to 5 years, with outdoor choices extending from a sandpit to a racing track and climbing frame. There is room for active play as well as quieter learning.

At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding and found that accurate assessments helped staff respond promptly to additional communication and mobility needs. That judgement is a dated assessment: a June 2026 organisational safeguarding notice is also material to the choice families make here.

The practical offer includes funded childcare stretched across the year, alongside privately paid care. Opening hours run from 7am to 6.30pm on weekdays.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The baby room follows each child's routines, making familiar patterns part of the move from home to nursery. In the nursery room, activities support children as they explore their interests and developing personalities. The toddler room has its own garden access throughout the day, giving children opportunities to choose between experiences indoors and outside.

Preschool learning has a more explicit next-step emphasis. Ready for School brings reading, writing and maths into activities intended to prepare children for school, with a specialist Early Learning teacher teaching preschoolers. This gives the older children's provision a clear purpose beyond keeping them occupied.

Learning and Activities

EYFS provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, play and activities give children opportunities to practise communication, physical skills and early literacy and maths. Alongside it sits the group-wide Bright Beginnings Curriculum, which connects activities with children's development and wellbeing, including changes of room and preparation for school.

Boogie Mites introduces learning through songs and music, while Every Child a Talker supports language development. These additions offer different ways to engage children: joining a song, developing words and exploring an early number activity need not feel like the same kind of task.

In July 2024, babies tackled suitable physical challenges and children had time to revisit developing skills. Story activities encouraged children to contribute familiar phrases, while comparing vegetables introduced size, measurement and counting. Practical objects gave early maths something tangible to work with.

Outdoor and Community Life

The landscaped garden separates resources by age, with the sandpit, climbing frame and racing track supporting different kinds of play. Toddlers' access to their own outdoor space is a useful feature for families whose children enjoy choosing where to play.

In July 2024, outings included shops and the local train station, connecting numbers and transport with experiences beyond the nursery. Children also cared for living things and met people from the community. Those experiences brought everyday life into their learning rather than leaving it as a topic discussed only indoors.

Care and Support

Individual baby routines and the Bright Horizons Family app provide practical links between home and nursery. The app lets parents follow their child's day, while Settling In Sessions give families time to become familiar with the nursery. Familiarity and communication matter most when a child is making that first transition into care.

In July 2024, staff maintained contact with parents and other professionals, and home learning support helped connect experiences in both settings. Toddlers made choices about how their snacks were served, while older children helped prepare tables. Everyday tasks were opportunities to practise independence.

In its outcome dated 22 June 2026, Ofsted identified significant organisational safeguarding weaknesses at some settings and found that the provider had not demonstrated it could ensure consistently effective safeguarding across its provision; it disclosed a Welfare Requirements Notice requiring organisational improvements to safeguarding leadership, oversight, staff training and the handling of concerns by 1 August 2026. These concerns were not identified at every individual setting, and the majority continued to meet requirements. The latest published position is that June notice; it does not establish completion of the actions after the deadline.

This organisational issue matters alongside the nursery's earlier educational judgement. It concerns how safeguarding policies become consistent practice, how risks reach senior leaders and how allegations are escalated. Families need to weigh that later position when considering Cedar Road.

An onsite chef and freshly prepared meals support the daily food arrangements. Private fees include meals and snacks, together with nappies, wipes, formula and creams; funded attendance has a separate food-charge arrangement.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is 16 Cedar Road, Teddington, TW11 9AL. Opening hours are 7am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, and the nursery operates across the year, closing for bank and public holidays, one inset day and the Christmas-to-New-Year period. These closures need to fit the family's annual childcare plans.

Funded childcare uses 10-hour sessions beginning at opening time. Additional attendance beyond that session is charged separately, and buying those extra hours is not a condition of taking a funded place. The fee structure covers attendance on between one and five days each week, so the number of days and the treatment of additional hours both affect the arrangement.

Fees are collected monthly in advance by direct debit, and a registration charge applies. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. Enquiries can be made directly by telephone, and personal tours can be booked online.

Getting There

Onsite parking and a buggy park support collection and drop-off practicalities. Teddington train station is close to the nursery, making rail travel another option for families using that route.

Funding and Paid Extras

The funded offer includes 15 funded hours and 30 funded hours, subject to eligibility, stretched over 50 weeks. This distributes the entitlement across more of the year rather than concentrating it in term time.

For funded hours, food is charged separately, but the food charge is non-mandatory and is not a condition of accessing a funded place. The nursery supplies consumables associated with those hours. Additional private hours remain a separate part of the bill, so funded childcare and the family's total attendance should be considered separately.

Things to Consider

  • Safeguarding oversight. The 22 June 2026 notice set an organisational action deadline of 1 August 2026. At a visit, ask for the subsequent outcome and how Cedar Road's reporting, training and escalation arrangements implement those actions.
  • Funded session boundaries. Funded sessions last 10 hours and start at opening time, with extra attendance charged separately. Compare that pattern with the hours your family actually needs, including the non-mandatory food arrangement.
  • The youngest children's day. The baby room works around individual routines, while toddlers have their own garden access. Use a tour to discuss how settling, sleep and movement between rooms would work for your child.

The Verdict

Cedar Road suits families seeking care across the year, whether using funded 10-hour sessions or adding privately paid hours, and whether attending fewer days or a full week. Its Victorian building, age-separated garden and named language, music and school-preparation activities give the offer substance.

The July 2024 Outstanding judgement supports its educational strengths at that time. The later organisational safeguarding notice carries significant decision weight too; a choice here needs to take both into account.
