Kish Kindergarten

German and English sat side by side in children's play at Kish Kindergarten in July 2022. The provision was rated Good, with the same judgement across education, behaviour, personal development and leadership. The setting is at St. Andrew's Church Hall in Ham and has capacity for 32 children.

The strongest thread was purposeful, practical learning. Children used real tools for woodwork, explored unusual sensory mixtures and talked in both languages with confidence. This was not activity for activity's sake: staff used questions and counting to stretch children's thinking.

The Early Years Foundation Stage shapes learning through play, conversation and guided activity across children's communication, physical, personal and early academic development. In July 2022, Kish Kindergarten's bilingual curriculum gave children regular opportunities to hear and use German and English as they played. This strengthened language, social development and children's sense of belonging.

Woodwork added unusual substance. Children made alien spaceships and aeroplanes while learning to handle hammers and nails. Elsewhere, shaving foam and oats became materials for sensory exploration, and a discussion of the butterfly life cycle helped practitioners extend children's thinking. Physical play included a slide and obstacle course.

There was room to improve. In July 2022, outdoor curriculum planning was less assured for children who preferred learning in the natural world, and the learning environment did not yet do enough to broaden children's understanding of cultures beyond their own community.

Relationships were a clear strength at the inspection. Meaningful praise and reassurance supported self-esteem, while opportunities to manage feelings helped children behave well. The mixed-age group was socially comfortable, with considerate behaviour and positive bonds between children.

A new start-of-day pattern was helping children become ready to focus with less friction in July 2022. Staff also worked with parents and other professionals, monitored learning for gaps and gave children with additional needs clear, consistent messages.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective in July 2022. Staff completed regular training, understood how to report welfare concerns and supervised children effectively. Home-cooked meals from a balanced menu supported healthy routines at that time, while children built independence through managing personal care.

Kish Kindergarten operates from St. Andrew's Church Hall, Church Road, Ham, Richmond, TW10 5HG. At the July 2022 inspection, children attending were aged two to five. Funded early education was provided for two-, three- and four-year-olds at that time. Families should request the current attendance pattern and a nursery-specific written quotation directly.

• Outdoor learning. Outdoor provision was not yet as thoughtfully developed as the indoor curriculum in July 2022, especially for children most engaged by nature. Families should explore how this has developed.
• Cultural breadth. Inspectors sought broader cultural reference points in the materials and experiences surrounding children. This is a useful point to discuss alongside the bilingual emphasis.
• Attendance choices. Families should compare the available attendance patterns with the term-time routine recorded in July 2022.

Kish Kindergarten's bilingual character is more than a label in its inspection record: children were confidently using German and English in everyday play. Practical woodwork, sensory exploration and thoughtful questioning gave the curriculum personality, while warm peer relationships and consistent care provided a secure base.

This setting is best suited to families drawn to bilingual early education and hands-on learning, who are comfortable checking how the outdoor curriculum, cultural breadth and current attendance arrangements have moved on since 2022.
