The Kings Road Nursery

At a Glance

A covered garden, a Sensory Room and music with puppets give The Kings Road Nursery a character that goes beyond its Richmond address. There is space for physical play alongside quieter sensory exploration, with a small climbing bridge in the youngest children's room. These are useful differences for families weighing how a child will spend the day.

At its June 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. The setting accepts children from three months to five years and is based at 102 Kings Road, Richmond, TW10 6EE. Its strongest practical features are the provision for outdoor play in changing weather, sensory resources and organised music and sports activities.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Yellow Room serves babies and toddlers aged 0–2 years, combining a small climbing bridge for movement and balance with mirrors, tactile resources, a book corner and equipment children can reach themselves. For a young child, that brings opportunities to practise moving and choosing into the same room. The nursery's overall starting age remains three months.

The separate Sensory Room brings together sound, coloured lighting and objects for sensory play. Its purpose is exploration through the senses. This gives families a concrete facility to weigh alongside the ordinary play spaces, rather than an abstract promise about sensory learning.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the welfare and developmental expectations for young children; here, active play gives children opportunities to explore, participate and learn. It is the foundation for the nursery day. The organised music and sports activities add specific experiences alongside it.

Fit & Fun is a sports programme held on Friday afternoons, with activities directed towards coordination and both small and large movements. Caterpillar Music uses changing weekly themes, instruments, puppets and songs with actions to bring music into young children's learning. Movement, listening and participation are the practical attractions of these sessions.

In June 2025, younger and older children chose what to play with, including sand and shaving foam. Older children also practised making marks together as preparation for early literacy. These examples show the balance between independent exploration and activities that build towards school.

The learning priorities needed sharpening in June 2025: some activities lacked a clear intended learning point, and questioning sometimes moved on before children had enough thinking time. The distinction matters. Enjoying an activity and having time to explain an idea are both parts of a useful nursery experience.

Outdoor and Community Life

Covered space keeps outdoor play possible when the weather changes, while the garden's open areas provide another setting for movement. An artificial-grass surface covers the soft-play area. Painting, water and sand play continue outdoors, alongside scooters, tricycles and construction with large blocks.

This is a garden with several uses, rather than simply somewhere to run. Children can move between creative activities and physical play. In June 2025, children also explored natural materials there, adding a sensory dimension to their time outside.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Settling is planned as a partnership with parents and carers. Staff work with families to help a child become comfortable enough to play and learn apart from them. The parent-partnership policy also makes exchanging knowledge about the child a shared task, giving family experience a place in nursery care.

At the June 2025 inspection, Ofsted found effective collaboration with parents and professionals, especially for children with SEND, strong developmental progress including for children learning English as an additional language, and positive parental feedback about communication and settling. That gives the published partnership approach some substance, while keeping the judgement tied to its date.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

The nursery describes an approach to recognising additional needs and planning provision for children who need support. The Sensory Room adds a physical resource with lighting, sound and sensory objects, although an individual child's support should be considered through their own needs rather than through a facility alone.

Staff are trained in early years care and first aid. In June 2025, everyday health teaching included drinking water in hot weather, using sun hats and disposing of used tissues. These small routines connect personal care with growing independence.

An in-house chef plans menus around allergies, intolerances and religious requirements; meals are prepared on the premises without salt, sugar or processed food. The nursery has a nut-free policy; families managing allergies should discuss current practice as part of their visit.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates throughout the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas. That makes the annual closure pattern relevant alongside the daily opening window when families plan care around work.

General enquiries can be made by telephone on 020 8948 8853 or by email to office@kingsroadnursery.com. Visits take place by appointment. To join the waiting list, families submit an enrolment form and an enrolment fee; joining that list does not secure a nursery place.

Getting There

The address is 102 Kings Road, Richmond, TW10 6EE. A covered buggy park can hold parents' buggies, bicycles or scooters, providing a practical option for families bringing these with them.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded early education is offered, and the nursery's funding policy addresses provision for three- and four-year-olds. Families should obtain current prices through a written quotation. The enrolment fee relates to the waiting-list application, so it should be considered separately from ongoing childcare costs.

Things to Consider

  • Learning purpose and thinking time. In June 2025, activities needed clearer learning intentions and children sometimes needed longer to answer questions. During a visit, ask how staff now plan the next learning step and allow children time to respond.
  • Your child's daily care and costs. Yellow Room caters for the youngest children, while funding provision includes three- and four-year-olds. Ask how the proposed attendance pattern works, how settling and sleep are arranged, and what the quotation includes for food and consumables.
  • Waiting-list commitment. An enrolment form and fee are required to join the list, but membership does not guarantee a place. Treat the application as a request for consideration rather than a confirmed childcare arrangement.
  • Allergy planning. Meals are prepared on site with menus adapted for dietary needs, and a nut-free policy applies. Allergy-affected families should confirm the current preparation and handling arrangements before agreeing care.

The Verdict

The Kings Road Nursery suits families who value sensory exploration, outdoor play across changing weather and organised music and movement. Yellow Room's climbing bridge and accessible equipment give the youngest children's provision a concrete shape, while Caterpillar Music and Fit & Fun add different ways to participate.

The June 2025 Good judgement provides the quality position, with clear teaching priorities still relevant to a parent's assessment. The strongest match is a family looking for play-led care with practical resources, who will weigh the proposed attendance arrangement and waiting-list commitment carefully.
