Twenty places for children aged two to five make Joyful Star Nursery a small preschool setting in Bermondsey. This family-run setting cares for children aged two to five at Gataker House, Slippers Place. It serves the preschool years rather than starting with babies.
At its March 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and reported that children made good progress through carefully planned learning. That assessment provides a positive foundation, but two practical improvements mattered: shorter carpet sessions and more opportunities for children to manage tasks at meals.
Attendance includes full-day and half-day sessions, with hourly flexibility also offered. The range gives families different ways to use the nursery, subject to its minimum weekly booking requirements.
The EYFS guides learning here: children develop language, movement, relationships, early literacy and mathematical understanding through play and activities. It is the shared early-years framework, rather than a special programme unique to Joyful Star. Painting, drawing and model-making sit alongside work with sounds, numbers and patterns, giving children several ways to practise and express new ideas.
Language receives concrete attention. Children have opportunities to speak and listen, while early literacy includes recognising sounds within words. Physical learning covers balance, coordination and handling tools or materials, with activity both inside and outside. These strands connect everyday play to skills children will use as they become more independent.
In March 2023, staff extended conversations during play, introduced new vocabulary and shared familiar stories including We're Going on a Bear Hunt. Mathematical ideas were introduced in stages: coin pillows came before learning about the value of money, while sand play prompted comparisons of quantity and size. The useful detail is the progression from something children can handle or discuss to a more abstract idea.
In March 2023, children used a garden and practised putting on their own outdoor clothing. Choosing play materials also gave them a part in directing their day. Outdoor activity therefore had a practical independence element alongside movement and play.
A multicultural day featured in March 2023, with families contributing food from their countries and examples of traditional clothing. It gave children a concrete way to explore differences and similarities among their friends. This was family participation in learning, rather than a lesson built only around pictures or explanations.
In March 2023, staff knew children and their families well, joined their play and used encouragement to support participation. Children talked about feelings and explored ways to manage them, making emotional language part of the day. Recognition for helping with tidying connected expectations about behaviour to actions children could understand.
Homework books were another March 2023 feature. They explained each child's next learning steps to parents, creating a connection between nursery activities and support at home. The value was specific information about what a child was working towards, rather than simply a general account of the day.
Current recruitment arrangements include safeguarding training during induction, references and enhanced checks covering the children's barred list. These procedures govern recruitment and induction.
The registration form asks about disabilities, medical conditions, allergies and dietary needs, as well as emergency contacts and who holds parental responsibility. This gives families a formal opportunity to pass on information that affects daily care. It also requests a collection password for an unfamiliar person collecting in an emergency.
Meals and snacks are freshly prepared at the nursery, with seasonal menus following a four-week rotation. Dietary planning involves parents and covers allergies or intolerances, cultural preferences and vegetarian or vegan requirements.
In March 2023, children explored balanced diets using pretend food and practised handwashing. Independence was less consistent at meals, however, where staff missed chances to extend children's skills. That distinction matters: encouragement to manage coats and belongings did not yet carry through equally to eating routines.
The address is 2-3 Gataker House, Slippers Place, SE16 2EN. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with a late collection service for parents whose working day runs longer.
Full Day Session means more than seven hours; Half-Day Session lasts five hours. There is also an hourly rate and flexibility around individual session requirements. These are booking lengths, separate from the opening window. The minimum weekly commitment is two full-day sessions or three half-day sessions, so the shorter option still involves regular attendance.
The calendar includes bank-holiday, Christmas and inset-day closures. The detailed closure schedule is a decision point below. Enquiries and visits can be arranged through the contact form, by email at admin@joyfulstarnursery.co.uk or by telephone on 02073946110. Registration involves completing a form, followed by consideration of the requested sessions.
Beyond nursery attendance, a collection service operates from Southwark Park primary school. An after-school club and holiday play scheme cater for children aged two to eight. These extend the service beyond the nursery's preschool age range; they are separate from its core nursery offer.
Term-time funded childcare includes 15 hours for eligible two-year-olds and up to 30 hours for eligible three- and four-year-olds. Additional private hours alongside a funded entitlement have a separate term-time charging structure. Eligibility is conditional, so this is an offer to eligible families rather than a promise of entitlement for every child.
Private session fees include meals, snacks and drinks. For funded attendance, a weekly charge called a consumables fee covers those food and drink items; parents supply nappies and wipes. Separating these positions matters when comparing the total cost of a private session with funded hours plus extras.
A deposit equivalent to two weeks' fees is taken at registration and returned when the child leaves, provided at least one month's notice has been given. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the fees and funding page explains the charging categories.
Joyful Star suits families seeking either regular full-day attendance or a repeated half-day pattern for a child aged two to five. Its scale, practical learning examples and food prepared onsite give the offer substance, while the March 2023 Good judgement supplies a dated quality assessment.
The decision rests on matching the attendance commitment and closure calendar to family life, alongside understanding the funded-hours food charge. The inspection's two improvement points also provide useful, concrete matters to explore during a visit.
Ofsted rated it Good in March 2023 and found safeguarding effective. The improvement points were to shorten carpet sessions and give children more independence at meals.
The nursery cares for children aged two to five and has 20 places in total. Its separate after-school club and holiday play scheme serve children aged two to eight.
The EYFS guides play and activities across language, movement, relationships, literacy, mathematics and creative learning. In March 2023, examples included coin pillows for early money concepts and We're Going on a Bear Hunt for shared storytelling.
