Nuffy Bear Day Nursery Cheam

At a Glance

One ground-floor room, with areas designed for different ages, gives Nuffy Bear Day Nursery Cheam a clear physical identity. Its purpose-built nursery space sits within the Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre on Peaches Close. Children aged 3 months to 5 years attend, and the setting has 36 places in total.

At its August 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, describing supportive relationships and learning shaped around children's interests, while identifying an improvement needed in outdoor supervision. That combination matters: the account of children's experiences was positive, but the supervision finding deserves a direct conversation before joining.

Full-day, morning and afternoon booking patterns give families more than one way to organise attendance.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The shared room contains Baby, Toddler and Pre-school areas: Baby caters for 3 months to 2 years, Toddler for 2 to 3 years, and Pre-school for 3 to 5 years. These are age-group areas within one room. For parents, the layout makes the organisation of activities and quieter routines an important part of understanding the nursery day.

Learning and Activities

The nursery follows the early years foundation stage. In August 2023, this took practical form through drawing insects, investigating wildlife outdoors and learning to manage everyday tasks with staff support. Children's interests helped shape activities, giving them a reason to concentrate and contribute.

During that month, children interested in insects used pictures to support their drawings and followed a checklist while searching outdoors. Discovering spiders' webs prompted shared excitement, while conversation about worms gave children an opportunity to explain what they knew. The learning connected observation, language and drawing around an interest children already had.

Independence also featured in August 2023. Babies tried putting on their bibs and received reminders about using spoons; older children helped younger children with serving lunch and clearing away. These small responsibilities gave children practical ways to take part in the day's routines. Staff encouraged children to work out solutions and recognised their efforts.

Outdoor and Community Life

In August 2023, the outdoor space supported running games, parachute play and songs. Staff helped children use bats and balls, while younger children practised pedalling tricycles. Those examples show movement taking several forms, from joining a group game to practising coordination with equipment.

Outdoor supervision was the significant qualification. In August 2023, there were occasions when staff did not fully supervise every child outside, and the improvement action required staff positioning to keep children within both sight and hearing.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In August 2023, babies and toddlers returned to familiar staff for reassurance while exploring, and children had close relationships with their key workers. Adults explained what would happen next, including the move from lunch to a nap. For a young child, familiar people and understandable routines can make participation easier.

Parents reported helpful communication in August 2023 and felt welcome and supported. Mother's and Father's' Day events brought families into nursery life and helped build relationships. These were examples of family involvement at that time, rather than a fixed current events calendar.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the August 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective and found that cooperation between staff and outside professionals supported children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. This gives parents a dated assessment of both safeguarding and the support arrangements operating then.

In August 2023, staff used observations to follow children's learning and adjust activities to individual needs. Children also peeled and chopped bananas themselves, bringing food preparation into the day's practical experiences.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The nursery offers full-day, morning and afternoon sessions. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday; those hours describe the opening window rather than the length of each booking pattern.

Attendance runs across the year, with closures on Bank Holidays and for one week at Christmas. That calendar is relevant to families arranging childcare around work as well as those organising shorter sessions.

Getting There

The address is Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre, Peaches Close, Sutton, SM2 7BJ. Nursery enquiries can be made by telephone on 020 8770 7858 or through the nursery enquiry form.

Funding and Paid Extras

In August 2023, the nursery received early-education funding for children aged three and four. Materials and consumables have a separate charge for Cheam's full-day, morning and afternoon patterns, so the attendance charge is only one part of the cost to consider.

For current prices, ask the nursery for a quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Outdoor supervision. The August 2023 improvement action concerned keeping every child within staff sight and hearing outside. Ask how staff positioning and supervision now work during outdoor play.
  • One room across the age groups. Baby, Toddler and Pre-school areas share the ground-floor room. During a visit, ask how sleep, active play and activities for different ages are organised together.
  • The attendance quotation. Full-day, morning and afternoon patterns carry separate materials and consumables charges. Ask for one quotation covering your intended pattern, including how funded hours, food and consumables would be treated.

The Verdict

Cheam merits consideration for families seeking either full-day attendance or morning and afternoon sessions in a purpose-built setting with age-group areas in one room. The August 2023 picture gives useful examples of relationships, practical independence and interest-led learning. The outdoor supervision action remains the essential point to discuss alongside the shared-room layout and the full attendance cost.
