Magdalen Nursery, St George's Grove

At a Glance

A cookery school with equipment children can reach, a sunken sand pit for toddlers and storytelling that develops into drama give this purpose-built nursery a practical, playful character. Magdalen Nursery, St George's Grove combines spaces designed for different stages with opportunities to cook, move, experiment and tell stories. There is plenty here for children to do with their hands.

The nursery has capacity for 152 children, with a current age range of 3 to 60 months. At its June 2024 inspection, Ofsted judged the provision Good and safeguarding effective. That judgement came with two useful cautions for parents: staff deployment needed to respond more consistently to younger children's developing needs, while lunch routines and larger groups of older children needed better organisation to make more room for learning.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Five classrooms divide the indoor provision into spaces for babies, toddlers and preschool children. Baby rooms combine sensory areas with cosy spaces and a home corner; toddler rooms pair the sunken sand pit with a creative station; preschool spaces separate art, home-corner play and interactive learning, giving older children different places to work independently or together.

The cookery school adds something tangible to that layout. Its larder and accessible baking and cooking equipment put practical tasks within children's reach. For families who value learning through handling materials and trying things out, this is a more useful detail than a broad claim about creativity.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, communication and growing independence belong together in the nursery day. Alongside it, the nursery uses a play-based curriculum and a more structured school-readiness programme for preschool children. The latter gives preparation for the next stage a defined place in the older children's experience.

Debutots develops storytelling from sensory experiences and movement into drama, role play and retelling as children grow. Its practical value is the progression: younger children can participate through movement, while older children have opportunities to use language and take parts in stories.

In June 2024, children collaborated on a marble run, collecting materials and exchanging ideas as they built. Babies experimented with chunky chalk, with adults modelling words for them to imitate. Books also featured across the age groups: babies handled sturdy books themselves, while older children chose stories to share with their key person. These examples make the balance between exploration and adult involvement concrete.

Outdoor and Community Life

Separate outdoor provision recognises the difference between younger and older children. Under-twos have soft play surfaces and gentle climbing equipment. The over-twos' space includes balance beams, a climbing frame, an exploration sandpit, a planting area and a mud kitchen, allowing physical play and messy investigation to sit alongside growing things.

Regular outings extend children's experience into the local community and beyond. In June 2024, family events included Sports Day and summer party celebrations attended by parents. These offered another way for families to participate in nursery life, beyond individual conversations about their child.

Care and Support

Knowing the child matters as much as arranging the room. At the June 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that staff understood their key children's individual needs, supported emotional regulation and coordinated early help with families, the SENCO and external professionals for children needing additional support.

In June 2024, indoor hideaways gave children somewhere to retreat when overwhelmed, while adults helped them find ways to manage their feelings. Independence was practised through ordinary tasks, including getting water and following hygiene routines. These were small, repeatable opportunities to do more for themselves.

Things to Consider

  • Younger children's care. The June 2024 improvement point concerned how staff were deployed to meet younger children's emerging needs. During a visit, ask how deployment responds when several babies need attention together.
  • Lunch and larger groups. In June 2024, these routines did not consistently make the best use of learning opportunities. Ask how the preschool day now organises eating and group activities.
  • Practical learning. Accessible cookery equipment and a structured preschool school-readiness programme give hands-on learning a place in the day. During a visit, ask how these experiences fit into your child's age group's routine.

The Verdict

Magdalen Nursery, St George's Grove suits families drawn to practical play: cooking equipment, Debutots storytelling and separate outdoor spaces give that preference substance. Its weekday opening window also suits families seeking care across the working day.

The June 2024 Good judgement supports a positive assessment, with clear questions about younger children's care and the organisation of lunch and larger groups. Its hands-on provision is the strongest reason to consider it; the dated concerns about everyday care and routines deserve equal weight.
