Arabic songs, Wednesday sport and a play space that opens between indoors and outdoors give Precious Jewels Nursery its character. Based at St. Augustines Church & Church Hall in Tooting, it combines learning through play with language lessons and visiting sports sessions. These are concrete additions to the day, rather than a curriculum name left unexplained.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 14 December 2023 inspection. The current age range is 24 to 60 months, making this a setting for children beyond the baby stage. Its community-based approach puts partnership with parents alongside attention to each child's interests.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, during term time. The term-time calendar is an important part of the choice here, alongside the learning and care.
EYFS provides the foundation: children develop communication, movement and social skills through play, alongside early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. The curriculum builds activities around children's interests and engaging topics. For parents, that means the learning is intended to connect with what catches their child's attention, rather than treating every child as interested in the same thing.
Arabic Lessons add vocabulary through colours, shapes, numbers and the alphabet, with weather, days and simple songs also included. ABC Sport Stars visits each Wednesday for PE sessions with the children. The two additions serve different interests: language learning has a place alongside organised physical activity. Details of the approach sit on the curriculum page.
In December 2023, alphabet bingo gave older children practice connecting letters with sounds. Mark-making varied with development: younger children experimented with circles and lines on paper, while older children drew recognisable people using markers and wipe boards. These examples show how familiar play materials can serve different stages of early literacy, rather than requiring children to complete identical tasks.
Free movement between inside and outside is part of the environment's design. The Home Corner supports pretend play and can become a restaurant, supermarket or post office. Changing its purpose gives children different situations in which to rehearse conversation, roles and familiar everyday experiences.
Outside, sand and water support messy exploration, while the Natural area brings gardening into play. The physical space therefore makes room for both movement and investigating materials. Children can explore outdoors as part of their learning rather than treating it solely as a break from indoor activities.
In December 2023, children steered balance bikes around garden obstacles, and sand timers helped organise turns with wheeled toys. They also grew tomatoes, tended the plants and prepared the harvest for a snack. Gardening connected looking after something over time with an everyday use for what they had grown.
In December 2023, staff used stories, songs and pictures to introduce vocabulary, including for children learning English as an additional language or experiencing language delays. Pictures gave children another way to understand unfamiliar words. Communication support was woven into ordinary activities rather than confined to a separate exercise.
Parents contributed through evenings with staff and All About Me forms in December 2023. Links with speech and language therapy and occupational therapy were also part of the support arrangements at that time. These mechanisms gave staff ways to draw on knowledge from home and specialist professionals when planning for children.
At the December 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children, including those with SEND, making good progress from their starting points. That is a dated judgement about both protection and learning, rather than a guarantee about each child's experience today.
The Calm Corner gives children a place to pause when emotions become overwhelming and practise recognising and managing their feelings. It adds a quieter option to an environment otherwise designed for free exploration. Children do not have to remain in the busiest activity when they need a break.
Rest arrangements were an improvement point in December 2023: the sleeping space and routines needed more careful organisation to support better sleep. Staff development was another, with coaching and training needing to connect more closely to individual development needs. These are practical concerns about the nursery day and teaching, and they deserve attention alongside the positive findings.
The nursery opens from 7.30am until 6pm on weekdays and operates during term time. This gives a substantial daily opening window, but the calendar matters just as much: families needing care during school holidays should weigh term-time provision against their working arrangements.
The address is St. Augustines Church & Church Hall, 16-18 Broadwater Road, London SW17 0EF. Enquiries can be made through the contact form, by telephone on 020 8767 3801 or by email at enquiries@preciousjewelsnurseryltd.co.uk.
Funded nursery education is offered for children aged two, three and four within the term-time provision. The age groups identify the offer; they do not establish an individual family's eligibility or guarantee a funded place.
Meals use halal meat, with seasonal menus covering breakfast, snacks, lunch and tea. The nursery's dietary policy covers allergies and other dietary requirements; families affected by allergies should confirm how current practice accommodates their child.
Precious Jewels suits families seeking term-time childcare with Arabic learning, Wednesday sport and everyday access between indoor and outdoor play. The Home Corner and Natural area give its play-based approach concrete settings, while the Calm Corner makes space for emotional regulation.
The December 2023 Good judgement supports the choice, but sleep organisation and targeted staff development remain relevant discussion points. The strongest fit is a family whose childcare calendar matches term-time operation and who values language, movement and practical exploration within the same nursery day.
Ofsted rated it Good on 14 December 2023. The improvement points concerned sleep arrangements and coaching tailored to individual staff development needs.
The current age range is 24 to 60 months.
