A Grade II listed barn, owl-named rooms and a sensory room give Brishing Barn Nursery a recognisable character. The setting in Boughton Monchelsea takes children from 3 months to 5 years and has 80 places in total. Its appeal lies in the detail: babies begin with familiar home routines, older children practise managing their own clothes and meals, and a garden makes outdoor play part of the day.
At its May 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective, while identifying a need for more demanding activities for older children and better support for less-experienced practitioners. That is a positive assessment with two specific qualifications, rather than an unqualified endorsement of every aspect of teaching.
Families can choose morning or full-day nursery sessions, alongside a term-time Playgroup option for older children. The differences extend beyond the clock: Playgroup has its own daily limit, packed-lunch arrangement and attendance calendar.
Snowy Owls accommodates babies from 3 months to 2 years, with care initially shaped around their routines at home. Its staff-to-child ratio is 1:3. Its sensory room contains textured treasure baskets, sensory boards and bottles, lighting and music; children from elsewhere in the nursery can use it too. This gives sensory exploration a dedicated space, rather than making it dependent on whatever else is happening in the room.
Little Owls, for children aged 2 years to 2 years 9 months, combines activities children choose themselves with adult-led learning, emphasising relationships, emotions and growing independence. Familiar adults remain important during this stage. The balance is between making choices and retaining the security of a known key person.
Upstairs, Tawny Owls has a maximum of 14 children, with spaces for construction, pretend domestic play, books, maths and messy activities. Children choose resources themselves and also join activities using paint, rice, pasta and shaving foam. Practice with shoes, socks and toileting brings self-care into ordinary play and routines.
Barn Owls serves children aged 3 to 5, preparing them for school through dressing, bathroom independence and serving their own drinks and food. Stories, creative work, movement and music sit alongside time with a key person. The Barn Owls Poem reinforces consideration for others through reminders about listening, sharing and using words kindly.
The EYFS shapes learning through play, with observations used to plan for individual children. In practice, this means the activities should respond to what a child can already do and what they need to try next. It is the educational framework, rather than a separate branded programme.
Brishing Barn Playgroup occupies the building opposite the nursery and welcomes children aged 3 to 5, with a daily maximum of 16. Its routine includes crafts, sand and water activities, group discussion and time organised around the key person. After lunch, books and stories provide a quieter part of the day. This is a different attendance option within the setting, with its own rhythm and garden access.
Each nursery room has outdoor periods allocated in both halves of the day, with indoor alternatives during extreme weather. The large garden gives children room to explore beyond their indoor activities. Families need to provide clothing for the conditions, including winter layers and wellington boots, and a summer hat and sun cream.
In May 2022, outdoor play included tricycles, slides reached by steps and a tyre trail for balancing. Adults helped when needed while allowing children to attempt manageable physical challenges. Those examples illustrate the kind of movement children experienced at that time: climbing, propelling themselves and testing balance, rather than simply spending time outside.
Baby care begins with a discussion about sleeping, food preferences and particular requirements, helping staff choose a key person and understand the child's familiar routines. The move onwards to Little Owls is gradual. That attention to continuity matters for a baby adjusting to different adults and a different place to spend the day.
For the move into Tawny Owls, settling visits happen at least weekly over about a month, with further visits if a child remains unsettled. Moving rooms is therefore treated as an adjustment in its own right. The timetable can respond to the child rather than relying solely on a birthday.
Online journals allow parents and practitioners to contribute observations from home and nursery. Babies also have a daily contact book which travels home and needs to return for the next session. These are complementary forms of communication: shared observations about learning, alongside a regular account of the baby's day.
At the May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that children formed secure relationships with their key persons and that SEND support was strong, with the SENCo helping families and staff obtain outside specialist support. The practical mechanism matters here: support involved referrals and cooperation with other services, rather than relying only on nursery staff.
In May 2022, children preparing for school explored their future setting with their key person, including looking online at its uniform and building. Staff also helped babies practise feeding themselves, with suitable seating allowing them to interact during meals. These were small, concrete ways of supporting independence while keeping an adult close enough to help.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday, from 7am to 6pm, for 51 weeks each year, closing for bank holidays and a week spanning Christmas and New Year. Morning sessions run from 7am to 1pm; full-day sessions run from 7am to 6pm. Children younger than 2 must attend at least two full days each week, while children older than 2 have a minimum of two sessions weekly.
Playgroup runs for 39 weeks during term time, with daily sessions from 9am to 3pm. Its funded sessions can be arranged flexibly. Families choosing between the nursery and Playgroup therefore need to weigh the annual calendar as well as the length of the day.
The address is Brishing Lane, Boughton Monchelsea, Maidstone, Kent ME17 4NF. Nursery enquiries can be made by telephone on 01622 749800 or through the contact form; nursery and Playgroup registration forms are separate.
Free Early Years Education Entitlement is offered for eligible 2-year-olds and as 15 or 30 hours for eligible children aged 3 to 4. In the main nursery, funding is organised into blocks of 5 or 10 hours; Playgroup offers eligible families flexible funded sessions free of charge during its term-time calendar. Barn Owls also combines funded entitlement with the nursery's longer hours.
Fresh meals arrive each day from an external caterer; Playgroup children bring a packed lunch and receive a morning snack with milk or water. Playgroup's healthy-eating arrangements include making people aware of allergies.
Nappies and wipes are supplied by the nursery, while families bring sun cream and suitable spare clothing. Current prices for paid childcare come in the nursery's written quotation, allowing families to consider their chosen attendance pattern alongside their funded entitlement.
Brishing Barn suits families choosing between early-start morning sessions, full-day nursery care and a shorter term-time Playgroup day. Its strongest practical details are the sensory room, gradual room transitions and emphasis on children managing everyday tasks themselves. For babies, familiar routines lead the care arrangements; for older children, independence runs through dressing, meals and bathroom use. The May 2022 assessment gives a positive foundation, with the quality of challenge and staff interaction remaining useful subjects for a visit.
Ofsted rated it Good at the May 2022 inspection and found safeguarding effective. Improvement points concerned challenge for older children and support for newer, less-experienced staff during play.
