Play Place Riverside Pre-School

At a Glance

An indoor climbing frame and play inspired by visits from the police and dentist give Riverside's village-hall setting a recognisable character. In November 2024, children climbed, balanced and turned encounters with local professionals into imaginative games. These are useful examples of learning through experience: physical challenges alongside chances to understand the people around them.

Play Place Riverside Pre-School operates at Yalding Village Hall in Maidstone, with 26 places in total. Its current offer welcomes children aged 14 months to five years. At its November 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good and found safeguarding effective.

The practical shape is term-time childcare, with opening hours of 9am to 3pm on weekdays. That calendar matters as much as the educational offer for families planning care around work.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care, linking play with skills such as communication, movement and early mathematics. Riverside combines freely chosen play with planned activities shaped around children's interests and their next developmental steps. That gives adults a way to extend an interest rather than simply move children through a fixed sequence of tasks.

In November 2024, children helped choose songs and voted on the following week's story. Their preferences influenced what happened next. These small decisions gave them practice in expressing an opinion and accepting a shared choice.

Sensory dough activities brought music and hand movements together during that same month. Children squeezed and stretched the dough, practising the control needed for increasingly precise movements. Numbered parking spaces for toy cars brought numbers into children's play, although staff sometimes missed opportunities to extend mathematical ideas. Enjoyment of an activity and the depth of its teaching were separate issues here.

Outdoor and Community Life

Visits to the local park and participation in village events connect the current offer with Yalding's community. They give children experiences beyond the preschool's immediate setting while keeping local life part of their learning.

In November 2024, physical play included the indoor climbing frame, bicycle pedals and outdoor balancing challenges. Children could practise different movements rather than rely on one kind of exercise. Visits from the police and dentist also fed into role play: children used what they had learned when pretending to be police officers.

Care and Support

At the November 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that staff knew families well, helping children settle, and used their understanding of children's interests to adapt experiences for those needing additional support. The strength was practical knowledge of the child and family, rather than a single activity offered to everyone in the same way.

During November 2024, adults sat alongside children at meals and used conversation about food, crops and farming to develop language. Everyday routines therefore created opportunities to talk and learn as well as eat.

Independence needed more attention that month. Children managed handwashing and bathroom routines, but adults sometimes completed manageable tasks for them, including serving older children's food. Families who value growing self-reliance should look closely at how staff balance help with allowing a child time to try.

Continuity across childcare settings was another weakness in November 2024. Relationships with other providers attended by the children had yet to develop, leaving information-sharing about learning inconsistent. This matters especially where a child's week is divided between providers.

Funding and Paid Extras

In November 2024, the preschool provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated participation fact rather than a promise about an individual child's entitlement or attendance arrangement.

Things to Consider

  • Independence in everyday routines. In November 2024, adults sometimes did tasks children could manage themselves. During a visit, ask how mealtimes and personal-care routines now give children opportunities to practise doing more independently.
  • Mathematics through play. November 2024's improvement priorities included extending mathematical learning. Ask how staff now develop ideas about numbers and other mathematical concepts during children's chosen activities.
  • Shared childcare arrangements. Information-sharing with other settings needed development in November 2024. If your child attends another provider, discuss how both teams will exchange information and maintain continuity.
  • Term-time planning and costs. The weekday opening window runs within term time. Before joining, request a written quotation covering your intended attendance, funded hours where applicable, and the arrangements for meals and consumables.

The Verdict

Riverside suits families seeking village-based, term-time preschool care, with play connected to children's interests and the surrounding community. Its November 2024 examples give that offer substance: climbing, story choices, sensory activities and learning from professional visitors. The balance also needs attention. Independence, mathematical teaching and communication with other childcare settings were clear improvement priorities, making these the most useful topics to explore before choosing it.
