Fruit-and-herb potions, museum outings and early conversations shaped children's experiences at this Longsight nursery in January 2024. In January 2024, children explored smell, taste and texture while practising new vocabulary, connecting hands-on play with language learning.
Tiny Turtles Daycare Manchester has 70 places for children aged 0 to 60 months. At its 15 January 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good and found safeguarding effective. The main improvement point concerned giving children more consistent opportunities to manage everyday tasks themselves.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for learning, development and care: here, its inspection-time examples included physical play, conversation and creative exploration.
In January 2024, babies practised reaching and standing, while older children used scissors, dough and pipettes to develop hand control. Museum trips introduced scientific ideas; visits to local parks brought opportunities for movement and discovering nature. These experiences took learning beyond activities inside the nursery.
The sensory activities had a clear language dimension in January 2024. Mixing fruit and herbs gave children something concrete to smell, taste and describe, and they used recently learned words during the activity. Vocabulary was being used for a purpose, linked to what children were making and discovering.
Physical learning also involved different kinds of challenge that January. Babies reached towards objects that interested them and received encouragement as they pulled up to stand. Toddlers and preschool children jumped, climbed and balanced during outdoor play. Alongside the hand control involved in scissors and pipettes, these experiences gave children opportunities to practise movements involving their whole bodies.
Cooperation also received deliberate attention that January. Staff sometimes reduced the resources used in an activity so children could practise waiting and sharing. Children offered friends cutlery and made room for others to join their play, putting those social skills into everyday use.
In January 2024, staff helped children settle, offered comfort during the day and supported them into sleep. Parents shared information about their children's cultural backgrounds, which informed learning activities, and received detailed updates alongside ideas for continuing learning at home.
At the January 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that planning responded to individual development and interests, children were well prepared for school, and communication progressed strongly, including for children learning English as an additional language. In January 2024, staff worked with children on the foundations of early speech.
The independence concern was practical. In January 2024, some children missed opportunities to remove their coats or help themselves to food and drinks, even though babies were encouraged to choose toys and feed themselves. Everyday routines needed to give children more chances to use their developing abilities.
That January, staff also helped children think about how their behaviour affected others. Sharing and taking turns were practised within planned activities, with children encouraged to manage their reactions rather than simply wait for an adult to settle disagreements. For parents, the practical interest is how staff help a child cope with wanting an object another child is using.
Staff support in January 2024 included coaching, training and frequent meetings about their work. Practitioners discussed the learning they intended activities to support and demonstrated that understanding in their interactions with children. This connected planning with what adults actually did during play.
Parent communication that January extended beyond a description of the day's activities. Families received information about children's learning progress and suggestions for continuing that learning at home, giving them ways to connect nursery experiences with everyday family life.
The address is 38 Kingfisher Close, Longsight, Manchester, M12 4PW. Opening hours are 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year except Bank Holidays.
In January 2024, the nursery provided funded education for two- and three-year-olds. That is a dated account of funding participation rather than a current entitlement offer.
Tiny Turtles suits parents who value language-rich play, practical physical development and experiences beyond the nursery, judged against its January 2024 practice. Its year-round opening hours also suit families organising weekday childcare. The balance is clear: a positive inspection assessment, with everyday independence the specific point to explore.
