Boundary Road Pre-School

At a Glance

Radishes, spring onions and a pretend Chinese restaurant give Boundary Road Pre-School a practical, imaginative character. In February 2024, children explored growing food, handled chopsticks and used Chinese lanterns in their play. These were concrete ways to connect learning with things children could grow, make and investigate.

At its February 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the pre-school Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that staff supported children with special educational needs and/or disabilities through work with specialists and strategies including visual timelines.

Based at Rycroft Hall in Chatham, the setting has 30 places in total. Children attending in February 2024 were aged two to four; that age range describes the inspection-time group.

The Nursery Experience

In February 2024, learning combined conversation, imagination and practical tasks. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, its everyday expression included talking about ideas, practising physical skills and becoming more independent.

Growing radishes and spring onions gave children something tangible to investigate. Pretend restaurant play brought unfamiliar objects into imaginative activity, while conversations with staff encouraged children to explain their thinking. Sign language added another way to communicate.

The garden supported both movement and independence. In February 2024, children practised climbing and balancing, put on their own coats and wet-weather clothing, and prepared and served snacks. Outdoor equipment purchased with additional funding supported physical learning. Everyday tasks mattered alongside planned activities.

Children also explored henna patterns and Islamic beliefs in February 2024. Learning greetings in Bulgarian extended this attention to different languages and backgrounds.

Care and Support

In February 2024, staff knew children's preferences and personalities, helping relationships develop around the individual child. Visual timelines gave a concrete sequence to routines, and emotion and feeling cards were among the tools staff used following training about emotional wellbeing.

Communication extended beyond the child's day. During February 2024, parents received updates about achievements and next steps, alongside healthy-eating recipes and information about sources of support. This gave families practical material to use at home.

Food activities also carried a learning purpose: in February 2024, children made butter and jam and discussed sugar content, while conversations about oral hygiene linked food choices with health. Staff observed one another's teaching and discussed feedback, providing a practical route for reviewing their work.

Practical Information

The address is Rycroft Hall, Boundary Road, Chatham, ME4 6UW.

In February 2024, opening hours were 9.15am to 4pm from Monday to Thursday and 9.15am to 12.15pm on Friday, during term time. That timetable matters for families arranging care around work and school holidays.

At that time, the pre-school received funding for free early education for children aged two, three and four. This describes its funded provision in February 2024.

Things to Consider

  • Explaining boundaries. In February 2024, staff did not consistently explain why children needed to stop an action. Children need the reason as well as the instruction to understand its effect on others.
  • Changes of routine. During February 2024, staff sometimes missed opportunities to help children engage when routines changed. Adult attention at these points is an important part of the day's continuity.
  • Term-time timetable. The February 2024 opening pattern included a shorter Friday. What attendance arrangements now apply across the week and school holidays?

The Verdict

Boundary Road Pre-School suits families who value practical learning, imaginative play and growing independence. Its February 2024 strengths were tangible: growing produce, communicating in different ways and managing everyday tasks. The two improvement points deserve equal weight, because clear explanations and timely adult involvement shape how smoothly children experience their day.
