Sweetpeas Early Years Provision

At a Glance

In May 2023, fruit picked for snack time, ceramic painting and an imaginative post office gave Sweetpeas Early Years Provision a character rooted in practical exploration. At its May 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated it Outstanding, finding highly effective teaching, confident learners and strong language development.

Based at Community Hall in Yeoford, the nursery has capacity for 42 children. In May 2023, children attending were aged one to four; the examples below describe nursery life at that time.

The Nursery Experience

In May 2023, the curriculum translated children's next steps into daily activities. The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, play brought together language, physical skills and opportunities to become independent.

Preschool children cut pretend stamps for a post office, combining imaginative play with scissor practice. Babies explored dough with seeds, brushes and tools alongside a familiar adult. Carpet activities included recognising names and discussing favourite colours, giving children reasons to speak and share ideas.

Outdoor experiences in May 2023 included collecting fruit from the allotment area for snacks. In the woodland garden, younger children experimented with sand and containers; older children explored coding toys. Books, songs and shared stories also featured in their learning.

Specialist visits that year included ceramic painting workshops. Children learned about Chinese New Year, Holi and Diwali through festivals meaningful to their friends, connecting cultural learning to people they knew.

Care and Support

At the May 2023 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding and excellent support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including prompt referrals, sensitive encouragement to join activities and rapid progress.

In May 2023, familiar routines helped children settle, while everyday responsibilities included clearing plates and putting toys away. These were concrete opportunities to contribute to nursery life.

Parent involvement that year included Christmas concerts, Easter egg hunts and sports days. Families also received advice about learning at home, with home visits when needed. Staff development included regular supervision, observation of teaching and personalised training; new practitioners worked alongside leaders during induction. Safeguarding quizzes tested staff knowledge, keeping procedures part of ongoing discussion.

Practical Information

The address is Community Hall, Yeo View, Yeoford, Crediton, EX17 5HY.

In May 2023, opening hours were 7.30am to 6pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, across the year. At that time, the nursery received early education funding for children aged three and four. These are dated operating arrangements rather than a current attendance offer.

Things to Consider

  • Attendance planning. The May 2023 opening pattern covered Monday, Wednesday and Friday. What attendance patterns, hours and funded arrangements would apply to your child now?
  • Practical exploration. In May 2023, children picked fruit, handled sand and used tools in imaginative play. Consider how well this emphasis matches the experiences you want for your child.

The Verdict

Sweetpeas merits consideration for families who value practical play, outdoor exploration and close involvement in their child's learning. Its May 2023 examples connect ambitious learning with ordinary childhood pleasures: making things, sharing books and helping at mealtimes. The Outstanding judgement is a strong dated endorsement; the useful decision is how that approach fits your child and your attendance needs.
