A mud kitchen, sheltered decking and a nurture group give Acorn Day Nursery, Rowans a clear character: outdoor exploration sits alongside practical support for language and behaviour. Based at The Rowans Family Centre in Fullers Slade, Milton Keynes, it has 46 places in total and accepts children aged six to 60 months. The setting combines spaces for younger children with a shared room for toddlers and preschool children.
At its November 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall, with strengths in children's engagement and staff interactions, while identifying improvements needed in questioning and daily routines. Those priorities matter alongside the grade: children need time to formulate an answer and clear signals about what happens next.
Full-time and part-time care are offered, alongside fully funded places for eligible two-, three- and four-year-olds.
The Acorn room accommodates up to 18 children, with a quiet area for rest and sleep within the room. For families choosing care for a younger child, that arrangement makes the relationship between active play and rest an important part of the room's layout.
Squirrels and Oaks share a connected space with capacity for 28 children altogether, rather than a separate cap for each group; activities are matched to children's development, with Oaks also having group time to prepare for school. The shared arrangement makes it useful to understand how staff organise younger and older children's activities within the same space.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: everyday play, conversation and practical experiences contribute to their development. Alongside that framework, preschool children in Oaks take part in regular Forest School sessions, an approach centred on learning through outdoor experiences in a natural environment. Creative play, trips and outings also form part of the offer, giving children experiences beyond their room.
In November 2023, children experimented with leaves, tossing them upwards and watching the wind move them, then discussed seasonal changes in the garden. This linked an immediate physical experience with conversation and an introduction to cause and effect. Learning had something concrete to start from.
Language was also woven into play that November. Staff introduced vocabulary and encouraged children to draw on what they knew, explain their ideas and solve problems. The weakness was pace: questions sometimes followed too quickly for children to organise a response. A useful interaction needs room for the child's contribution as well as the adult's question.
Covered decking gives children shelter and shade, while the back garden combines a mud kitchen with places to dig and plant. At the front, a sheltered sandpit and play structure add different ways to play. These are usable outdoor spaces for messy exploration and movement, rather than a garden serving only as a backdrop.
Outdoor play continues in different weather conditions. In November 2023, children used large outdoor equipment to practise movement, coordination and judging the space around them; moving equipment through narrow gaps also gave them a tangible challenge to work out. The practical emphasis suits children who like to investigate with their whole bodies.
Every child has a key person, providing a familiar adult as they get to know the setting. The nurture group supports children experiencing language delays or difficulties with behaviour, making targeted help part of the nursery's offer rather than relying solely on general room activities.
At the November 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and observed that the key-person arrangements helped children build trusting relationships with staff. Children sought comfort and shared their play with adults. This was an assessment of practice at that visit, rather than a substitute for understanding a child's current care arrangements.
In November 2023, staff modelled considerate behaviour and helped children recognise feelings and their effect on other people. Children also practised everyday independence, including handwashing and serving food using tools. These small tasks connected personal care, physical skills and making choices.
Work with the children's centre that November included helping families find additional services and sharing information about diet and dental health in the evenings. The connection with the family centre gave that support a practical setting beyond the children's room.
Meals are prepared fresh by Acorn Catering and brought in daily from its kitchen at the Shenley Church End nursery. Menus are designed around nutritional balance, using local produce and ingredients sourced with ethical considerations.
The address is The Rowans Family Centre, 13a Moorfoot, Fullers Slade, Milton Keynes, MK11 2BD. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with both full-time and part-time care offered throughout the year. The opening window gives working families an early start and an evening collection point; the attendance pattern is a separate booking choice.
Closures cover bank holidays, the period between Christmas and New Year, and four staff training days each year. These breaks need to fit into a family's childcare arrangements even where attendance otherwise continues across the year. Enquiries can be made directly on 01908 563269.
Fully funded places are offered for eligible children aged two, three and four, alongside paid childcare. Eligibility remains a condition of that offer. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, allowing families to consider their own attendance pattern rather than a general headline price.
Rowans suits families seeking either full-time attendance or a part-time pattern, with an outdoor offer built around digging, planting, sand and messy play. Its nurture group adds a specific reason to consider it for a child needing support with language or behaviour. The November 2023 assessment provides a positive starting point, tempered by clear questions about the pace of conversation and the organisation of routines. The fit depends on the child's experience of those everyday interactions as much as the physical spaces.
