Oakley House gives this Basford nursery an unusual layout: most of its accommodation is upstairs, with further space on the ground floor. The Little Den Day Nursery, Basford welcomes children from birth to five and has capacity for 36 children. Its Etruria Road address places it near the New Vic Theatre.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 17 October 2022, with language development and responsive care among its strengths, alongside improvements needed to mealtime routines and resources for child-led play. That balance matters. The strongest examples concern how staff understood individual children; the reservations concern how consistently the organisation of the day supported them.
In October 2022, learning included sand exploration, music and outdoor ball play. Children handled sand directly or experimented with diggers, while staff introduced water and discussed changes in texture. Stories and videos extended the activity beyond handling materials. This gave children different ways into the same experience, through movement, conversation and observation.
Younger children moved to songs and rhymes while shaking instruments. Outdoors, children enjoyed kicking balls. These examples describe a day with physical and sensory experiences as well as adult-guided learning, rather than one built solely around sitting and listening.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play and planned experiences support their communication, physical development and relationships alongside other areas of learning. In October 2022, staff supported speech by modelling pronunciation and planned adult-led activities around their knowledge of individual children. The practical value was that activities could start from what a child already understood.
Child-led play was the weaker element that month. The resources children could choose from were too limited at times, and some lost interest. The improvement required was therefore specific: give children more engaging possibilities when they were choosing their own play, rather than relying on adult-led activities to sustain attention.
At the October 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and SEND support good, with staff using observations to establish developmental targets and working with families and other professionals. These are dated judgements, but the mechanisms beneath them are useful: support involved watching how a child developed, identifying a next step and involving others where concerns arose.
In October 2022, practitioners dealt first with hunger, tiredness or unsettled feelings, then reassured children with cuddles. For babies and younger children, that order matters: care routines and emotional reassurance were treated as part of the day, rather than interruptions to learning.
Communication also had a practical purpose that month. Before children started, staff gathered information about health and dietary needs, shared it across the team and refreshed it regularly. Parents contributed information about children's starting points, while practitioners added their own observations to plan subsequent learning. Families received ideas for continuing activities at home.
Healthy meals featured in October 2022, accompanied by conversations about what bodies need. However, children sometimes waited too long after sitting down to eat and became unsettled, despite staff interacting with them during the wait.
Oakley House, 544 Etruria Road, Newcastle, ST5 0SX is the nursery's address. The building stands at the junction with The Avenue, near the New Vic Theatre. In October 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a historical participation statement, rather than a promise about a family's present entitlement or booking arrangement.
Basford merits consideration for families seeking care from babyhood through the preschool years, with an early opening time and an evening finish. Its October 2022 examples give substance to the emphasis on individual care: staff recognised immediate needs and used knowledge of children to plan learning.
The reservations are equally concrete. Child-led play and mealtime organisation needed attention, while the upstairs layout deserves a practical look. Families who value responsive care and purposeful adult-guided activities have clear reasons to consider it, with those daily routines central to the decision.
