A child-made limbo game and a chair for talking about feelings capture Dronfield Nursery’s July 2021 character: play, independence and emotional development shared the day. These are useful examples of what children actually did, rather than a list of educational ambitions.
At its 20 July 2021 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective, while requiring more precise learning plans and more consistent staff engagement. The setting is active at 274 Chesterfield Road, Dronfield, S18 1XJ.
In July 2021, children aged two to four attended the setting. Mathematics involved movement: children used dice, counted the spots and matched them with jumps. Working through number problems together gave them opportunities to practise cooperation as well as counting.
The early years foundation stage sets out requirements for children’s learning, development and care. Here, the July 2021 examples included learning through games, conversation and imaginative play. Children invented a limbo game using a plastic tube, agreed how to play and negotiated turns. That gave them a practical reason to listen to one another.
Children also voted on subjects for snack-time conversation in July 2021. Discussions about healthy eating became opportunities to extend vocabulary. However, planning did not consistently stretch individual children, and some group activities revisited learning rather than taking it further. Families should weigh those concrete experiences alongside that limitation.
In July 2021, a key-person arrangement linked children with staff who knew them individually. Practitioners helped children become more independent and offered opportunities to socialise with others of a similar age. Parents knew which activities their children enjoyed and what their next learning steps were.
An emotions chair gave children somewhere to use pictures and discuss their feelings with staff in July 2021. Adults also encouraged kindness through questions about words and actions, making emotional development part of everyday interaction.
Healthy snacks were supplied in July 2021, while staff encouraged parents to provide lunch boxes containing balanced food. Conversations about sun cream and drinking water connected everyday routines with looking after oneself.
