Storytelling, signing and nature walks give Barkway Preschool's inspection-era day its character. Children explored fruit alongside a book, watched aeroplane trails outdoors and practised serving their own snacks: everyday experiences became opportunities to talk, investigate and take responsibility.
Ofsted rated the preschool Good at its January 2023 inspection, finding a carefully ordered curriculum but uneven challenge during children's chosen play. Barkway Preschool now caters for children aged 24 to 60 months, with 20 places in total.
In January 2023, enthusiastic book reading encouraged children to listen for longer, answer questions and describe pictures. Saying and signing words connected language with concrete objects. Repetition helped children revisit their learning, although staff sometimes missed opportunities to take an interest further.
The fruit accompanying a story gave children something tangible to discuss, while questions about illustrations encouraged them to put their observations into words. Group reading therefore brought listening and speaking together in the same activity. Children also showed staff their artwork with pride, making their own creations part of the conversation.
Snack time offered a different kind of learning in January 2023. Children helped themselves to food, poured drinks and tidied their things away afterwards. These were practical tasks they could take responsibility for themselves. Outdoors, studying the crossing trails of aeroplanes with adults gave children a shared subject to investigate beyond the book or activity table.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the January 2023 examples show what that meant in practice: conversation through stories, independence through snack routines and exploration outdoors.
Nature walks introduced seasonal changes, while visits to the local church brought children into contact with historical buildings. In January 2023, children also used the outdoor area in different weather conditions, developing physical skills alongside their curiosity about the world.
At the January 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities well supported through individual plans developed with parents and external agencies. Those are dated judgements, rather than assurances about today's practice.
In January 2023, staff assessed risks throughout the setting and followed its security procedures. They understood how to respond to concerns about a child or a colleague's conduct. Recruitment checks were followed by further checks on staff suitability. This gives the safeguarding judgement concrete context: it covered everyday procedures and staff responsibilities as well as recruitment.
Support in January 2023 also took account of the developmental needs of children receiving additional funding. Plans involved both families and outside agencies, bringing information about the individual child into decisions about their learning.
In January 2023, children settled comfortably and built close relationships with their key person and other staff. Adults helped them recognise feelings, share resources and understand routines. Personalised photograph books supported conversations about similarities and differences, giving inclusion a concrete place in the day.
Parents received updates on progress and forthcoming learning. January 2023 partnerships with school staff supported preparation for moving on, while coordination with other childcare settings needed attention.
In January 2023, staff used supervision meetings and training to develop their practice, then shared learning at team meetings. Training was directed towards children's needs, including a therapeutic approach to behaviour. The manager and staff also discussed improvements with parents and the committee. Families therefore had a role in conversations about how the preschool developed, alongside receiving information about their own child's progress.

Barkway Preschool suits families seeking term-time preschool care, with a January 2023 picture of language-rich activities, practical independence and outdoor exploration. The most useful distinction is between the thoughtful experiences children received and the challenge that sometimes stopped short. How staff now extend children's interests deserves attention when choosing it.
