Hitchin House Day Nursery

At a Glance

A workshop for woodwork and experiments, a garden with a vegetable patch, and a separate space for communal meals give Hitchin House Day Nursery a clear character: children have places to make, investigate and practise doing things for themselves. The emphasis is on questions and practical discovery. Independence runs through the learning spaces and into everyday routines, including mealtimes.

At 41 Wilbury Way in Hitchin, SG4 0TW, the nursery accepts children aged 3 to 60 months and has capacity for 135 children. Ofsted rated Hitchin House Day Nursery Outstanding on 23 August 2022. That is a dated judgement, rather than a description of a recent visit, and the distinction matters when weighing the nursery's current arrangements.

Homely baby spaces and room moves based on readiness complement the practical learning. Flexible day bookings last at least seven hours.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The Snug is a cosy baby space intended to help children adjust to nursery life; the learning spaces also include Den, another homely room welcoming babies. Explorers gives toddlers an independent area for investigating their surroundings, while Pioneers provides a bright, spacious preschool environment with an emphasis on confidence and preparation for school.

Movement between stages follows children's developmental, emotional and social readiness, allowing progression to reflect the individual child.

Learning and Activities

EYFS brings learning, development and care together. Here, children investigate science and maths, learn to make things and practise independence through practical activities and everyday routines. Hitchin House adds Enquiry-Led Learning in Early Years: children's questions become starting points for investigation, supported by spaces designed for independent choices. This is an approach to delivering the framework, rather than a replacement for it.

The Montessori influence centres on children's choices during play, everyday experiences and activities suited to their age. Hitchin House draws on selected methods rather than operating as a Montessori nursery. That distinction matters for families seeking Montessori provision.

The Workshop gives that approach a physical setting. Tools, construction spaces and work stations support science, technology, engineering and maths activities alongside woodwork and creative work. Children can investigate through making things, rather than relying entirely on adult explanations. The learning page describes these spaces and their place in the nursery day.

In August 2022, babies investigated coloured rice through movement and handling, while older children devised number problems for friends to solve. Books also encouraged independent exploration: older children selected reading material from a library wall using a movable ladder, and babies enjoyed interactive books. These examples show the different forms practical learning took across ages at that time.

The workshop activities in August 2022 included moving coloured water with pipettes and choosing paint colours independently. Those are small, specific tasks with a clear purpose: manipulating equipment gives children practice in coordinating hands and eyes, while choosing materials allows them to take responsibility for what they make.

Outdoor and Community Life

The garden's vegetable patch and open-ended play resources extend opportunities for independent exploration outdoors.

In August 2022, physical challenges included a climbing wall, blocks and balance beams, with adults helping children think about safe choices. Older children also spent time with babies in the garden and adjusted their play around them. The dated examples give substance to the nursery's emphasis on independence: children were practising physical judgement as well as learning to consider younger companions.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In August 2022, key-person relationships were an important part of children's care, and staff worked closely with parents around individual needs. At its August 2022 inspection, Ofsted found highly effective parent communication, outstanding support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and effective safeguarding arrangements. These are inspection-time findings and should be read with their date.

eyLog Parent gives families secure access to learning journeys, daily diaries and reports on phones or computers. Families can also contribute observations about their child's development, keeping communication two-way.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

In August 2022, staff promptly adapted activities so children with additional needs could participate alongside their friends. Additional funding supported learning and wellbeing.

The Dining Room brings independence into an ordinary routine, with children eating together and practising tasks such as grating cheese. Food is freshly prepared on site by a nursery chef, with breakfast, lunch and a light supper served; meals accommodate dietary requirements through suitable alternatives. The communal dining space gives meals a social purpose as well as a practical one.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Bookings are flexible all-day sessions lasting at least seven hours, with a chosen start and finish agreed when booking. Session lengths must be multiples of 30 minutes, and starts and finishes fall on the hour or at 15, 30 or 45 minutes past it. This allows families to select a day length around their routine while keeping within defined booking rules.

Core opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Bookings can extend into the wider 7.30am to 6.30pm window, but opening outside the core hours depends on sufficient demand. The distinction matters for anyone whose workday requires an early start or late collection: the outer window carries a condition.

The nursery opens across 51 weeks, with closures for bank holidays, between Christmas and New Year, and annual training days. Admissions and bookings are prioritised primarily by the total weekly hours requested. Written notice of two months, or payment instead, is required to withdraw a child or reduce weekly hours, and extra ad-hoc sessions cannot be changed or cancelled after written confirmation.

Enquiries can be made by telephone on 01462 455 144, by email to management@hitchinhousedaynursery.com, or through the contact form. Visits can be arranged through the same contact route.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare and privately paid hours are both offered. The funding arrangements include the universal 15-hour entitlement from the term after a child's third birthday, and eligible entitlements of 30 hours for children from nine months and for two-year-olds. Eligible children aged three, four and five can receive an additional 15 hours, bringing their entitlement to 30 hours.

These entitlements relate to 38 weeks and are stretched across the nursery's 51-week year. Additional private hours are charged separately through a bespoke quotation. Fully funded bookings carry no charge and do not require families to purchase extra hours or services, subject to availability; eligibility alone does not promise a place.

For privately paid bookings, meals, drinks and snacks are included in the fee, as are nappies, wipes, nappy cream, other consumables and the family's chosen baby formula. The fees and funding page sets out the inclusive structure; current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. Families using an eligibility code must supply it before the term begins and return the funding paperwork by the specified deadline.

Things to Consider

  • Early starts and late finishes. Opening before 8am or after 6pm depends on sufficient demand. A working pattern that relies on the outer hours needs that condition resolved before booking.
  • Baby-room progression. The Snug and Den welcome babies, and moves between stages follow readiness. On a visit, ask how settling and the move into Explorers would be planned for your child.
  • Funded hours and the complete booking. Entitlements are stretched over 51 weeks, while additional hours receive a separate quotation. Assess the cost of your whole attendance pattern, including the distinction between funded and private hours.
  • Changing your commitment. Weekly hours influence booking priority, and reducing them requires two months' written notice or payment instead. Families with changing work schedules should weigh that commitment alongside the flexible daily start and finish options.

The Verdict

Hitchin House suits families choosing seven-hour days or longer flexible days who value practical learning and independence. The Workshop, vegetable patch and communal dining space give that approach substance.

The August 2022 Outstanding judgement adds a strong historical quality marker, while eyLog Parent and readiness-led room moves give families concrete current arrangements to assess. The main practical trade-offs are conditional opening at the edges of the day, stretched funding and the notice commitment. For a family whose routine fits those terms, the nursery offers a clearly defined combination of exploratory learning and flexible day lengths.
